I'm just curious, not meant to be offensive. But what makes a woman go for that shorter curly Barbra Bush hairstyle when they get older, almost like it's a standard? I know very few women with long flowing gray hair (and I'm in love with them all ). What gives with the hair?

agreed, ms air. rarely have i seen older women who could pull off the longer hair (it has happened though). i do prefer the shorter, more sophisticated look. nothing sadder or worse than a woman who's older trying to look 16 and it aint working (there should b a law).

... Long hair, drags the face down, like the lips.
... There are so many shoulder lenght or shorter hair cuts, what look better on a lady my age. Something what swings when you walk.
... I always alternate my hair style, every 6 month, so people dont get bored looking at me.
... What I dont understand is, why some women, like B Bush, never change there hair style. I know some, they have not changed there style in 20 years, or so.

My opinion, no women looks better in short hair, no matter if grey or not, colored or not. take a look at the most "popular" women today, most have longer hair. Actually, it would depent on the man/women doing the looking probably. For me, Don't start cutting it until it hits your belt line. LOL

Ah, so that's it! Shorter hair is supposed to equate with sophistication, just as age is supposed to equate with sophistication. Therefore, if a woman wants to be recognized as sophisticated, she will have shorter hair.
II guess the same goees for guys, business people (aka sophisticates) view guys like me, with long hair, with distain. Which is why, no matter how many companies I start, I always end up in the basement lab.
But, seriously. That is an eyeopener. Thanks.

I don't wear my hair short for sophistication. I wear it short because I have very silky straight hair that although the hairdresser says it is really thick, looks thin when it gets past my ears. It has never looked great long even when I was young and wore it that way. But it is a fact that long hair adds age to a woman's face and most of us don't need that. Short hair IS easier to care for, but that is not why I wear it short. If it looked good long, I would wear it long. I do try to keep a contemporary look and not that frozen helmet look that was popular many years ago but screams "old" today. My eyes are my best feature and short hair emphasizes them.
It is OK for a man to prefer long hair even on an older woman. If he was MY man, I would grow it for him even if it does look better short.

Yup, gotta jump in here and agree...long gray hair just looks wrong, lol. Older women can look "perkier" with shorter hair. Now, having said that, I'm growing my short hair longer now, lol.
Eye opener for us women too, so thanks for posting the question.

I used to have hair down to my waist, but as I grew older, I felt like Alice in Wonderland. It does drag my face down.
I also wanted to include, the texture of my hair has changed. When a little gray started to set in, I noticed my hair became a little coarser, and not quite as manageable.
I'm still getting over my last haircut though. It was NOT supposed to be this short. I had found a cut I really liked, a little below the shoulders, and I got butchered.
The only consolation is, my hair goes very quickly, so in a couple of months, I'll be back to normal.

Used to wear it all the way down my back, now it's nearly a crew cut. Used to take me half an hour to dry it (it's very thick), or if left to its own devices, all night to dry naturally. Now I don't bother with anything, just shower and go. OK, I dress first.
It's just a matter of having better things to do with my time. You can't please everybody, so you may as well please yourself.

You dress first, before you shower and go? Aren't the wet clothes uncomfortable?

Well, the wet clothes are preferable to implying that I left without dressing. And I'll bet I'd have been called on that little omission too!

~~ahem~~
What is *older*?
I guess I should assume, since this is a thread in the "...after 50" area, that you mean those if us 50 & older...
I will be 53 in a couple of weeks. Natural red hair (OK...some natural *highlights*) & below my shoulder hair length.
I like that I can get it up off my neck in a pony-tail or just let it hang down. I've had it short a few times in my life but I feel more like me with the longer hair.
Don't know if I'd do much just because of the year stated on my birth certificate.

Women tell women their hair really looks nice short. That is
because no woman wants another woman to look better than
her. That is the same reason that women spend so much time
trying to look their best when they go out at night- it is not to
please the men, but to outdo the other women (deep inside you know I am right, ladies).
You guys watch your date when some other hottie walks by.
She'll give her a good looking over and say something like:
"Fake boobs, she wears a wig, too much makeup, looks like
a tramp".
Men prefer longer hair (shoulder length or longer). We do not reject women with short hair, but we will always "check out the ones with the longer hair.
Great hair Jen/Ohio

In my opinion we (women) have been told for many years what is "appropriate" for different ages. Hair, the way we "should" dress, etc. I have always believed ( thanks to my Mom) that what we choose to be right for us is right! Yep, she was wearing a mini skirt at 66 and looked damed good, I might add.

I'm almost 52 and can still get away with longer hair. Its easier for me since I work out at the gym, I can pull it all back into a pony tail or twist it up with a clip.
Women's hair also thins out as we get older and turns gray. Much courser like Classy said. I find one of those buggers once in a while and just yank it out. But my days are coming...

angel, u look cute with ur long hair. not everyone can pull it off. i can smoke a cigar, but it doesn't mean i'm going to light one up. some things r attractive n some things arent. ppl who dont age gracefully r definitely not attractive. i guess they think they look the same in their mind's eye (must have a big ol cataract over it).

Hey Lecri, I have a catarac too. I so glad you said what you did about my post cause right now I I see a puffy cloud in one eye. It's getting fixed this spring...I tell the doc to be sure to remove the 'made in japan' label first...
