i'm a native of the state, born in fort smith. i hung out here until the early 80s then i wandered off and returned in 1986. i returned AGAIN in 2001, and i have been kicking myself since.

wha' happen? you used to be able to apply for a job and get a yay or nay in the same day (usually yay). now, these people want to try and run the gas plum dry out of your tank (it aint happenin' here, ppl). temp places abound! i understand testing and interviewing for them; now, they want me to interview with the client company? kiss my azz!

i know i'm going to save up enough money to get out and head back to texas. i've always prided myself on keeping my arkansas license and being an arkansas girl. ha! once i'm back on lonestar soil, i'm burning that thing n getting a tx license. hell, i might stop at the ok border n moon this joint.

i don't know what happened, and i don't like it. just call me the golden rose of tx.

Nov 29th? I'm sure no one will read this, but hell I like the subject. I come from Oklahoma, and miss the hell out of it! I lived in Monett Missouri for a while, and tulsa oklahoma. I'm in little rock, arkansas now, and this place, I must say, sucks! I mean, how can you not allow alchohol sales at a normal store, but you can go and get drunk at a bar, then drive home? Even someone who has never drank a drop in their life should find the irony in that.....I think either bars should be shut down on Sundays, or beer should be sold on Sundays at stores. Come on! hahahahaha

One can come and go as they please in the USA. I'm from NJ, been coast to coast. I've found that people who love Arkansas don't really pay attention to folks who find it uncomfortable. Of course my writing this negates the previous statement, lol.
What did you expect to find in AR?

not without money; must be nice to be independently wealthy.

i expected it to be the way it used to be: u could get a job on the day u interviewed if u were qualified and seemed to be a good fit.

ur right about the alcohol, cool. this state is so backazzward because of what they think the bible, billy bob joe fred (he barely got out of hs; do u think he went to seminary? ) and the voices tell them (maybe a combination of all three).

i'm working hard to get the hell out of this dump.

How does alcohol make itself? All I know is that where I live you have to drive 40 mi. to get a beer unless you go to the club (drink then drive home 6 mi.) Hmm, wonder why the economy is bad here, most people buy their drinks in Missouri, its closer, if you want to drink at home and stay out of trouble. Taxes? Cigarettes are about half the price in Missouri and sales tax, groceries are cheaper, so since you have to go anyway to get you drinks...I thought dry counties and bootlegging went out when they repealed prohibition until I moved to Arkansas. What are they thinking? I don't get it. I love the country here, I'm staying. Don't mean I have to agree with how things are. Dry counties From the ozark foothills.

I'm from Chicago.
I agree, your free to come and go as you wish. I personally like the dry county thing. I have no need for booze, and there is FAR less drunks and drunk driving around here than there was in Chicago, were you can buy booze at wal-mart.

OTOH, they do get carried away with the bible. The preacher from down the road is still trying to get me to find jesus. But I think he is starting to get the hint.

I applied for a job and was hired the next day. 3 times in a row. Though, the first two dont count because they were with temp services.

with a few impliments yeast does the hard part to produce alcohol. as long as you don't sell it, that's quite legal.

Firefightertim05, are these people are really right or not? You know I might be there in any months from now and if the embassy will permit me. Not that I am afriad to go there but I am just curious if these people are saying the truth. Soon I will be a residence of this state/country and I my self dont want to hear any bad information to my place. And what's wrong with the preacher walking in the streets? So are they right or are they nuts!

No, not walking the streets. He just stops by once in awhile. Which is cool with me, the other neighbors do too, talk for awhile.

But he keeps wanting me to go to church and stuff. I dont have a problem with those that believe in the bible, I just dont myself. And I dont like people try to push thier religon on me, thats all.

There is nothing wrong with this state. Nothing wrong with any other state. There is some I'd rather not live in (California, New York, New Jersey) for instance, but its all personal preference. If you like big cities, you might not like Arkansas, unless you stay close to Little Rock. Still, thats a pretty small town in comparison. I dont, however, like big cities.

What happened was too many people NOT exercising their right to vote, in came Bill Clinton raising taxes & " putting Arkansas 1st". Yeah, 1st to receive airplanes full of cocaine ,money laundring for his & Hillary's buddies in DC, has the entire world forgotten about the Iran Contra Conspiracy ? How do you think these people made it to the White House? Bush & clinton have been " in bed together" for 20 or more years ! I almost fainted when they were nominated to the democratic primary. Scandalous bunch of peeps right there dawg! That's why we are one of the worst states in the union, instead of being a leader .

I truly do love this state, and I've been all over this land ! Drove an 18 wheeler for more than 10 yrs.! Seen it all, and the only other states I think are close to being as beautiful &at the same time not overly populated & are still unspoiled are; Vermont,New Hampshire,Maine, I've yet to travel to the great northwest, but it seems to be pretty densely populated everywhere else. I don't wanta live anywhere else, except for the fact that I live ove here in the flatlands of northeast arkansas, I'd rather live in the hills, pretty much anywhere else in the state is great !

Basically, there aren't as many jobs in AR anymore because of the illegal population taking over this state.
The dry county thing will remain because the people who sit on the voting council and decide if a county goes wet or not get payola from the beer and liquor stores that sit outside the border of the dry county.(So they keep turning down the proposal each year) Imagine how much money they stand to lose if everyone from that dry county were able to buy alcohol @ their local store.

yeah...i have been born and raised in arkansas, and i have mixed feelings about the state. i lived in fayetteville for the past four years, and it was absolutely awesome...nothing like the near vacuum of culture that exists throughout the rest of the state. unfortunately, i'm back in little rock now for more school, and i don't even know what to do with myself! the blue laws are ridiculous, but i've made my peace with them...people are always going to try to make you follow their own moral compasses concerning such things...it sucks, but i just make sure to buy my booze on saturdays and it's not such a problem. anyway, i guess that's my two cents...people in this state tend to be friendly, though, and that's something i've always appreciated.

This reminds me of the old story of the gate keeper for the medieval town. What is it like here they would ask? He would ask back what it was like where you came from.

If they had negative tails he would say yeah people are like that here too best to pass on.

If they said people were good where they used to live he would tell them come in people are good here too.

Alcohol: I can buy beer 6 out of seven days here. Not hard to plan for that. I did live in the dry hills for many years. Missouri was the nearest place to buy. Cave City does seem a little far from the store. Yeast: my friends let me help brew. I poured cracked grain over the mash-tongue. Does that fall under Alcohol or culture?

Culture: I checked the wine tasting. My friends said the play “Full Monty” at the Rep was good.

Have you heard of Kickball? This is huge in Little Rock. (LRKA)

Saturday I skied with friends.

The Anthropology Club at UALR is a bunch of Darwin-loving-heathens so I joined.

We have science, my friend works in Nanotechnology. I tell my friends that when a graduate I will try to get a job here in Little Rock so I can stay.

Cheers,
The-LawnMower-Man

I moved to Arkansas in 1984. I now live in Missouri but I am only 4 miles across the AR state line. My business is in Rogers, AR I had lived in Colorado and hated it. Colorado is 75% high plains desert in spite of the mountains which few people can afford to live in year round. Denver was filled with smog and was famous for its "brown cloud". I decided to look for a new place to live in which was best suited for raising a family. I traveled through every one of the midwest and southern states and found the Northwest Arkansas region to be the best of all the places I had seen. It had a strong economy, a low crime rate, plenty of lakes, streams, rivers, trees and mountains of a tolerable height to live in. I moved my family here and never regreted it. When I hear people "bad mouthing" this state or area for some reason or another I say MOVE. If you don't like a place MOVE!!! I did when I disliked Colorado. As for the liquor laws I can say that they are good. People who enjoy drinking can still buy their booze here, they just have to plan better which makes them somewhat more responsible in that way. I do know this... There are many people who are victims of alcoholism, who can not pass by a liquor store without being tempted. It is good that there are still some areas which are safer for them to live.

As for getting a job... If you are really good at something and lead a responsible life you can always find a job. If you can't find a job you can always create one by buying and selling things. I know a woman who had a garage sale and only sold items she had FOUND along the road on big trash collection day. She made $1500 in one weekend. There is no excuse for unemployment in this country.

As for Texas, you can have it. I am sure there are some pretty places there, but I have never seen any.
