A phobia is an intense fear of something posing little or no actual danger. Common specific phobias are closed-in places, heights, escalators, tunnels, highway driving, water, flying, dogs, and blood. Such phobias aren't just extreme fear; they are irrational fear of a particular thing. Most of us have a few minor irrational fears. Some get nervous at the thought of getting on an airplane. Others shriek at the sight of a mouse. But if your fears are so intense that they interfere with your day-to-day living, you may have a phobia.
I am scared of heights and flying, I will not go down an escalator , up is okay unless its a very high escalator.I have claustrophobia. I have extreme needle phobia. I have a touch of social phobia , I detest being the center of attention. I have however become bolder in the past few years.
So what are your fears and how do you deal with them????????

Do hurricanes count?? I use to work as a medical assistant when I lived in Homestead, one of my duties was to schedule patients for MRI's and/or Cat scans. I couldn't understand why people were so scared of enclosed places. I now have that fear due to spending countless hours in the closet while Hurricane Andrew ripped my house apart.
Brian Tracy once said : "If you do not do the thing you fear, the fear controls your life."
Well I do not intend to do that again. So I will stick with my phobia.

I am like you dove, in that I get nervous when I am the center of attention - like when I had to give speeches in front of a class of 30 students in college. But I am glad I did, because it has helped my to relax a bit and to be much more comfident and comfortable giving presentations in front of a large group of people.
Also, I have somewhat of a fear of heights, but that's only when there's no guardrail, harness, or anything else separating me from a long drop off - and instant death. Otherwise, I would be too afraid to stand within my own height of the edge. Also I can't stand getting up on the sloped roofs of houses. I've had to do this a few times, and it makes me nervous. I'm just thinking of wanting to get down safely!
I don't know how steel workers do what they do. Either they are very smart and brave or they are very foolish and brave to be standing unharnessed on six-inch wide steel beams hundreds of feet up above the ground. I can't comprehand how they can do what they do on a daily basis. Either way, they obviously have their fear of heights under control. It's hard to imagine how they could even have such a fear, if they're doing that. They must know what they're doing, and I have tremendous respect for them. If not for them, our buildings wouldn't get built.

Like Dove, I too have a touch of social phobia, I detest being the center of attention or attending large parties. I also have a fear of falling from a great height and a fear of octopuses.
I think the fear of octopuses that came from watching a nature show about them when I was a little kid and the scene where they were shot from below (with the sky as the background) as they were spread out in a flat, fan like shape

Like most of you I hate being the center of attention...makes my job a little hard as I do some of the new hire training...lol My biggest one is sharks. Yes, it is because of Jaws. The weekend we saw the movie we were at the Jersey shore and the beach was closed due to sharks. Seems the Mako's wanted to see the movie. We had been in the water when they closed the beach.....soooo ever since then I don't do the ocean. Oh and one of my moron friends thought it would be funny to dig his nails into our legs and scare the you know what out of us.

My fear is of roaches ,its not like if I see one I run away crying or anything ,but its just that I reeeeaaaly just dont like them . On my long list of things Im cool with ,you wont see a listing for roaches, there not on my yahoo buddy list either. If saw one it would the classic cowboy stare down until we both went for our guns ,and of course there can only be one left standing in a dual to the death.
Im still here to write this post ,so I guess up until now I have been the victor ,but someday if I just disappear from this forum without saying goodbye or anything ,its will probably be because "the big one" hunted me down in honor of all his downed comrads that I am responsible for. Yeah I can see it now ,me comfy and cozy in my bed without a care in the world and up comes the infamous "Big One " and pulls out his little minature roach gun and pulls the trigger, POW ! Or maybe he will the imfamous "Buddhist Gandy Roach "that I have heard so much about that will have mercy on my soul if I change my life and never kill another roach . I would be cool with that as long as I didnt have to worship at the roach monastery.

Note to self.... buy Ken a case of raid and roach traps for his birthday. Ken I cant stand those little critters either , they make my skin crawl. When I was pregnant long long ago , I lived in a apartment complex that had a roach problem. Had I known that I never would have moved in. The first few months there I only saw an occassional one and had the complex come in and exterminate even if I only saw one. I had traps set everywhere just incase. One day a friend callled to ask to borrow a picnic basket I had. I went to get it out of the closet to clean the plastic ware dishes inside, When I opened the basket it was like a scene from a horror movie. I couldent tell you how many roaches were nesting in that basket. I screamed and called my husband hysterically. I spent the night at his parents house and the next day we broke our lease and packed up and moved out. Still gives me the creeps to think about it.

Yeah Witchie,Ive heard of that movie,im afraid if I rented it I might have nightmares all night.
Dove I pretty good in the bug spray department dont need any help there. When I moved into this house in Hernando county it had a big roach problem so I waited until I got rid of them before I moved in and started sleeping here. What worked was a combo of boric acid and the replacement of all the bad rotten wood [which was most of the roof] that they were living in,now all the roaches are gone . I do have a oak tree in my yard which is great for shade but some roaches were living in the tree. As long as they stay in the tree and dont come in the house Im cool, and Ive learned not to park my car under it in the summer with the windows open at night. In about 5 minutes it will have a flying roach in it . I cut out all the bad wood from the tree which seems to have helped ,they seem to love wet rotten wood.. Something else that helps to control roaches in your yard is set up a enviroment for lizards to thrive, they eat roaches. Lizards like rocks and shrubs alot.

The swans at Lake Eola Park. Not the real ones, those plastic ones. I refuse to get in and peddle around the lake. Maybe it's not the swans but the cruddy water in the lake that I might fall in if the plastic swan tips over....

It really is a funny movie....we happen to be talking about it today at work...lol The roaches do this dance number kind of like a Broadway show type number and a water ballet in the toilet. Yes, I know I am a sick pup.
Anyway, thought you might like this as it will give you some idea's of what to encourage in your yard for the roaches.
There are some vertebrate animals that will feed on cockroaches, including hedgehogs, frogs, turtles, geckos and mice.
So, mulch and clay flower pots on their sides would be good to have for roach eaters.

The movie "Joe's Apartment" was a MTV production movie, unknown if it was ever released on DVD, thou you MIGHT be lucky to find it in a flea market or used video store on VHS. But IF Ken has a phobia of roaches, I am wondering if it was as bad as the roach story in the movie "Creepshow"?

Reply Is that the lake at Sea world, was on one of those swan boats a few months ago. I guess Im really brave and didnt even know it. Now I have something to brag about to the babes.

Reply I didnt know about the sideways clay flower pots ,anything I can do to make the roaches not feel welcome in my yard is alright with me short of insecticides. Have had the House in PPark since 1989 and have done my best to try to encourage a healthy eco system,I have never used insecticides on the property and have always used natural alternatives and the yard seems to really be thriving its a bird/squirrel /gecco haven ,it like a little urban jungle, when I moved in the soil was pretty pore quality ,now if you put a shovel anywhere in the yard you will find a bunch of earth worms ,which are a sign of healthy soil, but now the house in hernando county needs some help, the back yard is like the sahara desert, with not much shade or animal life present . So now since im putting in trees shrubs and patio stones ect and want to make sure I dont do anything in the process to invite my arch enemy[the roach] and to encourage geccos. In reference to turtles eating roaches ,I didnt know that ,I wonder if thats true for tortuses too. I have a really large tortuses living on my property ,he loves to dig big hole where he lives ,then moves and digs another one,Im glad to have him as a roomate .

The Swan boats are in Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando, you peddle around the lake. Its really pretty down there , but those swan boats are far to much work. I do love Lake Eola though its a very romantic place.
