Video Game addiction is a form of psychological addiction related to a compulsive use of computer and video games, most notably [[MMORPGs] He has such a serious case of wow syndrome that he has dreams social interaction. People suffering from this form of addiction may experience intense cravings to play the game and may also suffer symptoms of withdrawal when they stop playing the game. Those affected may also enter long periods of self-imposed social isolation where friends and family are excluded. One example of this is the gamer widow or gamer widower, a term used to designate a spouse or significant other who has been neglected because of the video game addiction.

[edit] Possible causes
It is thought by some in the scientific community, that game addiction could be linked, in part, to the stimulated release of dopamine. Dopamine, a chemical produced by the brain, functions as a neurotransmitter and affects the way the brain controls body movement and the flow of information between different neurocognitive functions, especially memory, attention and problem-solving; all of which can be used while playing video games. Lastly, dopamine is commonly associated with the pleasure system of the brain, providing feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement to motivate and proactively perform certain activities.

Other psychological factors can also contribute, such as sunk cost fallacy. This fallacy occurs when a person feels compelled to continue performing a certain behavior because they have previously invested time in the behavior and do not want to feel as though their investment was wasted.

Notable cases
In South Korea a 28-year-old man died of heart failure after playing Starcraft for 50 hours at an internet cafe. [1]

In China:

A 13-year-old boy committed suicide by throwing himself off a 24-story building "to join the heroes of the game he worshipped" after playing Warcraft for 36 hours. [2]
A 16-year-old student in Shanxi province murdered his uncle to get money for online gaming. [3] (same link as above)
A Shanghai man was convicted of stabbing another gamer to death for selling his virtual sword in the game The Legend of Mir 3. [4]
Ten South Koreans died from excessive addiction-driven gaming in 2005, compared to only two known cases between 2001 and 2004. [5]

A New Zealand man fell from his roof after attempting to hang himself with his Playstation controller; the fall killed him; this was after playing God of War for 30 hours straight.[citation needed]

[edit] Treatment
McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts has set up Computer Addiction Services under the direction of clinical psychologist Dr. Maressa Orzack. She was interviewed August 8, 2006, speaking of the game World of Warcraft she said, "I'd say that 40 percent of the players are addicted. Note that the 40 percent figure was not derived from a scientific study overseen by Dr. Orzack, but rather came from "a forum that Nick Yee runs".[6] She added that "even if the percentage is 5 to 10 percent which is standard for most addictive behaviors, it is a huge number of people who are out of control."Ars Technica interview with Dr. Orzack, 8/9/2006 According to Dr. John Grohol, a colleague of Orzack's, "Dr. Orzack is not claiming that up to 40% of World of Warcraft gamers are addicted based upon any actual evidence or surveys of players. This is just her opinion, based upon her own experience and observation of the problem."PsychCentral - John M. Grohol, Psy.D., August 10, 2006

Also a new clinic in Amsterdam treating video game addiction has been "overwhelmed" with people seeking treatment. [7]

All addictions can be dangerous and harmful to the addicted person and others around him; however, video game addiction can be particularly detrimental to children. Video games are becoming increasingly popular with children of young ages, which in turn may raise the likelihood that these children will develop addictions to video games. Furthermore, playing violent games can increase aggression in children.

Video games are a product of our society not only technology. Parents spend less time interacting with their children and the children spend more time finding a way to fill this void. My daughter did not own a video game system until she was seventeen and the only time it was ever played was when she had a friend over. I made sure my daughters idle time was spent doing creative endeavors or reading a good book ( remember those) or playing good old fashioned board games.

What amazes me is how many adults waste so much time playing these games. I personally have never seen the appeal of it all. I do think the graphics are pretty neat to look at though. I will confess to playing pong and pacman in my day. Those were pretty cool

well, I know a LOT about addiction....and I also play SOME vid games...I feel it helps me keep my reflex's up... and is fun, so, IMHO it is not all wasted time...oh, and I do read 2-3 books a week, am up on current affairs, and interact with folks in person(perhaps NOT the kind of interaction I would lick).....
oh, and I only play 3-5 hrs a week...
but posting like mad on the internet is a GOOD waste of adult time

Well you have to live dangerously JF.. I did get new glasses this week so it should be better. Now all I have to do is clean that dirty windshield and I should do fine.

How about i pick up JF at seven and we meet over there eight. I most likely will be picking Linda up too after I get JF. Then Watch out Limeys , you will never know what hit you.
