I think USF college radio station FM 88.5 is a great station and a real asset to Tampa bay. I think the best part of the day is from 10 to 2 oclock on weekdays ,no music but great local and national public service broadcast ,including a local talk radio call in show and for a different take from the normal large corperate radio view ,you have democracy now. Check it out between 10 and 2 ! Between 2 and 4 they usually have really crappy blues [I mean even if you like blues ,this stuff is usually not very good ],so this is worth missing ,but between 8 and 10 at night on weekdays they often have some pretty good ,the anti top 40 music.
Oh yeah one more thing ,there are NO ADS !

I have a couple or more. The Eagle, 96.9 Jacksonville. I mostly listen to cd's or cassettes. Love the old Swing Street sounds I have and also classical.... oh, I like a lot of different stuff, depending on my mood. The most constant for me is Swing Street and I love the old Motown stuff too.

Fuchia thats the best playlist of all.. when you can choose the muisc you want to hear rather then a mundane list of tunes chosen by a programming director. I am so with you on this.
I know this may not be directly related to this topic , but it seemd the best place to make mention of radio personality Don Imus getting fired by CBS for making racial slurs. I never was a fan and frankly his comments were VERY inappropriate. The irony in it though he was in the middle of a radiothon to raise money for childrens charities when he got the word he was fired. There seems to be a rash of discriminatory comments being made by celebrities lately. Isiah Washington gay comment, and Michael Richards use of the N word. Kinda makes me sick that in 2007 there are so many that still hold so much contempt in their hearts for others.

ah, it may only be me, but it seems like only white folks are ever brought to task for this...blacks can get away with saying anything about blacks, Sharpton can say anything about whites..and heaven help anyone that wanted to start something like a "white collage fund"... I am not racist, but equal treatment means equal..

You know...
Jack has a very good point there.
Double standards are totally unacceptable.
So Jack, rest assured you are not the only one...

I don't think there is room for this Kind of Bigotry over the public air waves, whether it be Don Imus or some rapper. Disrespect is disrespect , regardless of the race of the person saying it.

I m not keen on any humor that is discriminatory in nature( though will admit to laughing at a few now and then), but Jack does make a valid point . When someone wants to make fun of their own ethnic group , it does tend to be more acceptable though. For Example I am the first to make jokes about my "plumpness" but do take offense when someone makes a Fat Joke. I guess it goes back to the old adage , Laugh with me but not at me.

I agree with you totally Kenn. That's why I believe racially offensive words like n_____, "ho", and "nappy headed", etc should NEVER be used at all, by anyone - whether they be white, black or any other race. It is important for us all to lead by example, and the first thing necessary to do that, is to not glorify certain very offensive behaviors that offend others, or which we ourselves find offensive if we see others doing it. Others will be watching and will only be confused if they see people, who are offended by certain behaviors, engaging in these behaviors.

I was channel surfing tonight and briefly watched a bit of a town meeting hosted by Oprah. Jason Whitlock a columnist on the panel had written an article addressing the comments made by Don Imus. He felt that hip hop and rap have somehow legitimized comments like the ones Don Imus made. He really had a very valid point. This genre of music has very demeaning references toward black women.
Here is the statement made by Columnist Jason Whitlock.
Jason says the negative portrayal of black women in the hip-hop culture has fostered many harmful stereotypes. "Our real problem is that we're not willing to accept responsibility for our role in this [problem]," he says. "We've allowed our kids to adopt a hip-hop culture that's been perverted and corrupted by prison values. They are defining our women in pop culture as bitches and hos. … We are defining ourselves. Then, we get upset and want to hold Don Imus to a higher standard than we hold ourselves to. That is unacceptable."
Until black men and women develop a deeper sense of self-respect, Jason says they can't expect respect from others. "In the history of mankind, no one has ever received more respect than they're willing to give themselves," he says .

Thank you Fuchia...it really is time that we become a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. I work in a program that serves children from low income familes. Many of these very young childen are being raised within the hip hop culture. You would be amazed how such young children already are adopting negative attitudes and gang mentality.
So what do we do .. we call in the troops...The girl scouts! They come once a weeks and work with our girls .
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
I use to be a Girl Scout and I know the experience made me a better person. The Scout leader that came today told me they really need volunteers... I am seriously thinking of getting involved with inner city kids to start them on a path to good self esteem!!!!!
