Anyone that knows me is aware what a mega fan i am of American Idol. This show will always be leagues above the rest for me.
Yet a strange phenomena has afflicted me this past year. I have been caught up in reality televison .. I will list the shows that I have had to watch from beginning to end, in the hopes of purging myself from sitting in front of the television.
In order of importance to me ****American Idol**** Dacing with the stars The Bachelor Americas top model Airing now So you think you can dance( season premiere was tonight) The Lot ( just started right after dancing with the stars ended) Soon to come America has talent American Inventor Hells Kitchen
I am sooo badly afflicted I sat for a full thrity minutes watching a reality show which occurs in England.. the show features a driving school , and their students as they learn to drive.. OMG I watched the whole show. This out of control
Why are so many of captivated by this ? Are we all voyeurs peering into someones life hoping to discover our own lives are not so bad after all?
Who knows

I like american inventor myself Dove and on occasion I will check out Hell's kitchen for a few minutes but I rarely get into reality tv shows anymore.
American inventor is fun to watch just to see what new inventions people have made and hope to market to the world. Hells kitchen I watch mostly toward the end of the show to see which person will win the top prize and all the backstabbing that leads up to it in the flashbacks.

I used to love to watch shows like Road Rules and The Real World. Now, I don't. It's interesting to watch for a little while, but like just about everything else on MTV, those shows are a bit too over glamourfied for my tastes.

Speaking of MTV shows I use to love watching Next but that too has grown old. I also miss watching Monster House and on occasion Monster Garage on Discovery Channel

I'm looking forward to Hell's Kitchen starting up again...I also watch Gordon Ramsay's "The F Word" on BBC America as well as a show where he goes around to restauranteuers to see if he can give them ideas on how to turn the business around and be profitable...it's very cool as well but those don't start up again for a bit...
Most of the reality shows are like this for me - if i'm home and they're on, I watch...but if there's something else to do I don't turn down invitations because a TV show is on...and i don't tape them either... (although, if someone said let's do something some night this week - i might pick a night that wasn't going to impinge on a certain show)

All life ceases for me on American Idol Nights.. I even scheduled my cruise around it so i would not miss it at sea. When I was in the hospital in January 06 I requested to not be disturbed during the show, and my wishes were respected. I really need a DVR system for next season. I missed the night Sanjaya was sent home due to a training at Universal Studios. That was catastrophic of course.
Now I am getting fixated on the Fox reality channel.. which goes behind the scenes at reality shows. There is a new show coming next season called Pirate Master.

EAngel this show is made for you.
Sixteen modern day pirates embark on a high seas adventure looking for treasure in the Carribean. Only one pirate will win the million dollar booty.

Part of the reason so many reality shows are on nowadays is because 1. they are way cheaper in cost to make than dramas and sitcoms 2. people have that whole stare at an accident mentality and this is a safe voyeurism that entertains on a socially acceptable parameter

EAngel that's so true. Reality TV requires no actors, and everyone seems to love to stare at accidents as if they've never driven past an accident in their lives. But I think it may also be because they don't make sitcoms like they used to anymore. I mean, I think the 80's will go down in history as a period of time when sitcoms actually used to be funny.

EAngel what you say is true... reality shows do cost much less to make than scripted shows, and, it is how broadcast networks can make a profit. We can also say that people now have shorter attention spans for old-style TV and our tastes have changed too. . If it was just about profit reality shows would have taken over television long ago . Back in the day, Star Search never became American Idol. Surely the broadcast networks wanted to save money back then too.
The shift to Cable Television is a big factor that has effected our viewing habits. We now watch more cable than broadcast programs.Cable networks have had to upgrade their programming to gather their audience while the broadcast networks has moved in the opposite direction.
So the increase in reality programming is not just a matter of broadcasters wanting to save money. They have a smaller market now. Broadcast networks have a new competitor as well.. the internet. More and more people are spending time on line then watching television. When you think about it. websites like this one are very much like reality television. We get to look into the lives of complete strangers all the time, and we love it.
I think we are all just fascinated by the fact that we get to see "ordinary people" doing extraordinary things, or doing common activities that we can all relate to.We can put ourselves in their place so in some ways its fuffilling our own fantasys.. I completely understand my fascination with American Idol. Its about watching dreams realized. We all have hopes and dreams, and watching someone realizing their dream is so satisfying to me. It makes me feel optimistic that no dream is impossible.

A new reality show starts tonight on abc, called Next Best. Contestants compete by impersonating famous celebrities. I will be watching. Like you, I watch just about all of the reality shows.

Oh yeah, and don't forget (unlike on television), here, everyone also gets to be a participant in all the action!!!

Honeybear I caught a fleeting glimpse tonight of Next Best.. during the commerical breaks for " So you think you can dance" .. during those commerical interludes I got to see a bad Donald Trump, a even worse Jerry Lewis, a pathetic Janet Jackson and a white dude trying to be Bill Cosby.
I think I have stumbled across one of the most annoying reality shows ever this evening. "Sunset Tan" Inside the world of a Los Angeles tanning salon. this makes " The Simple Life" with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie look like quality entertainment. Whats next a reality show at the gynocologists office?
Lets get creative here and see who can come up with a unique and original premise for reality TV.

Just saw that a new reality show is starting. It is featuring a 30 year old man who will be dating women in their 20s and women in thier 40s. It is called Age of Love. America's Got Talents starts again tonight.
Now for original ideas for new reality shows....
Cross Country Hitchhiking... 12 people start out in Maine and have to hitch hike to Hawaii, hitting every state. The last one to arrive at selected checkpoints will be eliminated. aka...how well do you trust strangers.
I'm Too Pretty For Jail....24 contestants (12 male/12 female) We could start them out with county jail and work up from there. Who can outsmart, outlast, outrun or hide from the other inmates?
This is getting very hard....almost everything has been done already. We have had dating, decorators, fashion designers, singers, been in celebrities homes, chefs, film directing, big brothers, survivor, now a pirate one. Anyon else care to come up with some offbeat game shows
