Have been talking a lot about Jersey lately and it has really opened up a lot of memories some good, some not so good. I guess I never realized how even after 17 years there is a lot I miss about Jersey.

Jersey gets blasted for being a garbage dump, but that isn't really what it is like. Yes, like any state it has it's bad area's, but there are a lot of very beautiful area's too. I started really thinking of what it is I miss and I don't know, maybe they are silly things, but wow did the flood gates of memories open!

Things I really miss...

The mountains!

Getting up at the crack of dawn, driving into the mountains on interstate 10, going horseback riding at Broken Wheel Ranch, skeet shooting and then to the lake for a BBQ and swimming.

Going to the fish hatchery and game farm in Hackettstown and Oxford

Going to the horse shows in Newton

Turtleback Zoo

Swimming at Bud Lake

Englishtown Flea Market and Raceway

Rockaway Raceway

Going down the shore..the boardwalk, fishing, hanging out on the beach at night.

The farms in the spring after the fields have been tilled and it rained.

Delicious Orchards

Tices Apple Farm

So, if your not from FL, what makes you homesick or what do you miss from home?

New Jersey has mountains?? I never knew that.

What I miss from my childhood home... well lemme see...

First of all.. I miss my mother's home cooking.. Nobody has managed to make red beans and rice or hamburger steaks quite like she can..

I miss waking up to the sound of Sunday morning talk on the radio and the smell of home cooking down stairs.

I miss eating real gumbo.. (That bland soupy stuff they serve everywhere else is NOT gumbo...lol)

I miss Mardi Gras and collecting beads and trinkets.

I miss the "winter"-ness of Winter and the way the holiday season felt more like the holiday season. We actually have SEASONS in Louisiana. I miss those.

I miss being able to order onion rings at any chicken fast food restaurant. (I know it's a silly to miss but I still miss it)

I miss taking day trips to my grandmother's house in Lake Charles and I miss the three-hour drive to her house. On the way, we'd take Interstate 10 (the real one...lol), first passing over long bridges through miles and miles of swampland, and then as we got within an hour of Lake Charles, peaceful scenic farmland.

I miss the Sunday morning drives to Hammond.

I miss living in New Orleans in a house on a street called Canal Blvd, and being seven years old, and the next-door neighbor who had a million cats and would always hand out KitKats to all the neighborhood kids.

I miss the neighbors across the street who would always let us swim in their pool on the weekends in Summer.

Strangely enough, I even miss going to the church in our town and the priest whom had become friends with... and the catechism classes, and then after word coming home to Monday Night football and a tasty meal of white beans and rice.

Yeah me too.
I don't miss home because I was born in St Pete, but I do miss my mother and her cooking, she passed in 1986,she made really great Chili and her Pumpkin Pie [made with honey instead of suger ] was great, also her corn bread, thick and dense not that fluffy light stuff..

I also miss my grandmothers cooking, she also made great Pumpkin pie,I think they both used the same recipe, she made the best Roast beef and gravy with home made biscuits, if you ate it, you would think you had died and gone to heaven, also she made great Beef Stroganoff.

Once you have tasted that kind of home cooking ,when you try them in a restaurant, they don’t even taste like they are in the same food group.

We moved from Chicago when I was little, but the things I miss........

Playing baseball or riding our bikes in the alleys until late.

The tire swing the next door neighbor had hanging from the tree

The silver tinsel christmas tree with the revolving colored lights, my dad would put up every year

This old woman that chase us down the sidewalk with her broom when we rode our bikes past her house.

The church bells that would ring every night at 6 from the church that was across the street.

Running to meet the bus when my grandmother would visit.

Seeing the fireworks every night from the amusement park when it was open, from my mom's bedroom window

Going to the pet store across from Wrigley Field every week, because my mom was into aquariums.

Digging for night crawlers in the yard to take on fishing trips.

Going to Brookfield Zoo

Smelling the lilacs that bloomed in the next door neighbors yard.

Going to the Sears tower every Saturday

Running through the sprinkler in the summer until we finally got a pool

The mile and a half walk to and from school every day. My sisters and I goofed off the whole way. We'd stop by the store and get candy, looked at the chickens through the store window and when it snowed we would go on the porches of peoples houses and jump off the ledges into the snow. We actually made it to school on time every morning.

I lived in Mississippi for a little over 9 years. I never went to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but the ones all along the coast in Mississippi were great. Biloxi would throw 3 back to back parades every year. I miss going to those. I dont know who had a better time, me or the kids. We had fun making catch boxes. I still have all the doubloons I collected throughout the years. We donated most of the beads we got to the senior citizens so they had something to throw out the next year. Did you do the King cakes too?

Your right Fuchia New Orleans has some best Gumbo. I miss the crawfish festivals as well that Mississippi has every year too.

Yes, we would and I even got the piece of king cake with the little plastic pink baby in it once or twice.

I never went to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but the ones all along the coast in Mississippi were great. Biloxi would throw 3 back to back parades every year.

When I was young, I mostly went to the parades in Metaire and around Lakeview, however, when I moved to La Place, they had this one parade I would go to every year. 'Twas lots of fun!

Awww I miss those things about NY too.. ESPECIALLY the pizza!!!!

I've been in Florida over a year and a half and I'm quite homesick. If it weren't for the fact I'm finishing my bachelors and have a great job, I wouldn't be here.

Every so often a friend on myspace will post those "you know your from ____ if"
and those bring back soooo many memories!!

When I think of a nice song about Jersey the first one that comes to my mind is the 'The Boardwalk' by the Coasters..

Okay, well now I've got the tune playing in my head. S'okay though. I like it. It's a nice oldie.

I lived outside Detroit until I was 19 and then spent about 7 years in Cincinnati. At times I miss both places. I don't think I could ever live in Detroit again though. I always remind myself why I like it here in December.

When I hear Turtle Back Zoo , Wild West City and Palisades it honestly brings me back to my childhood. Think I asked Witchietoo about Uncle Floyd on NJ's only television channel at the time, UHF 68 from the glorious rises of West Orange.

Yes, you did ask about it on another thread. I remember the name that is about it.

Now Turtleback Zoo...well that was one of my favorite places, so many memories there! Every Easter Sunday for as long as I can remember we went there. After Church, we would take a ride through Branchbrook Park (border of Newark and Belleville) to see the Cherry Blossoms, then go to Turtleback. Even when I was released from the hospital on Easter Sunday, I insisted we still go to the zoo....granted I paid for it, but it was worth it.

Witchie this thread motivated me to look up some of the places I mentioned on line and I was quite surprised to learn that some actually still exist and are up and running although some like the Gingerbread Castle are in disrepair. Seeing pictures of it though put a pang in my heart.

Its official today I have been in Orlando for Thirty Years!!!!!!!

Witchie I know I had mentioned to you in a Email that I found a website that features the neighborhood in the Bronx I grew up in. I registered on the site and lo and behold an old childhood friend contacted me. I thought that was pretty darn cool. If it were not for this thread and taking a trip down memory lane this never would have happenned.
