I had a battle with AT&T today. Several months ago my phone service went poof. There was a storm and I suspected that lightning may have been the culprit. I called to report it months ago and they gave me instructions. I was told to unplug the phones wait awhile and plug them back in. Was also told to try a phone that was not portable to see if it would work. I tried what they asked and still no phone. This had happenned once before and the phone magically started working again on its own. I figured this time would be the same. I continued paying my bill and used my cell in the meantime. Life got pretty busy as it tends to do , and I really gave my phone little thought.
About ten days ago a police officer showed up at my door in the wee hours of the morning to say a 911 call was being phoned in from my residence over and over. I told the officer that my phone was out of service so I had no idea how that could be. He said a series of 911 calls had been received. He suggested I alert my phone company. I have been so busy it just slipped my mind again. I called today. I told AT&T about having no service for months, and asked if it would be possible to get credit for all the months I have been paying without service. The representative claimed that a directory assistance call was made from my residence on July 13th.(I was at work at the time of the call, and my phone still was not working). He stated obviously my phone has been working just fine and he said he had no record of the call I made to them months ago. I told him about the 911 calls and he was smug and acted like I was lying. I told him I would get a police report if possible. I asked if there was evidence of any other calls made from this house . He was only able to look up the May - today and there were no calls. Except the mysterious directory assistance call. He went on to say that for all he knows I could have been on vacation and not using my phone.
I inquired if there was a way to look up if any incoming calls came in during that time. He said they do not keep track or have the technology to know if any incoming calls were received at my home. I feel so frustrated. Yes its my fault for not following up on this sooner. However I feel I was treated so poorly by Customer service. Yes I did ask for a supervisor , and he simply backed up his employee. Ten minutes ago my phone rang for the first time in months. The caller ID said Bell South. Bell South and AT&T have merged. Its a miracle that my phone started working after my call I am going to switch phone companies. I have had AT&T since I moved to florida 30 years ago and have always paid my bills on time. I am considering cable phone service.

i would make a written complaint to the FCC or the public service commission and tell them of your experience...
our utility, phone, cable, and internet providers react to those type of complaints...and don't be so quick to give up...
it's kind of like applying for SSI/SSD...they always turn everyone down the first time...lol
but seriously, i've had issues with those types of companies before and after you've tried the chain of command...threaten escalating the complaint and follow through with it...you'll end up with personlized attention and usually some compensation...my most recent battle with with my cell phone company and i received a new phone overnighted, 2 months free service...and the upgrade of phone fee waived...
in another instance, i received 6 months free internet service in addition to some other compensation from my cable provider...
don't give up!!!!!!!

The only reason I have it is because of my security system , my understanding is it works with the phone lines.
EAngel I like all of your suggestions, perhaps you could help me write a letter to the appropriate parties. You are awesome with stuff like that.
