Well it is getting be that time of the year[Halloween] and just happens to be a subject that I would like to know more about, Not to mention that we have our own resident expert here by the name of Witchiedee, I mean Witchietoo ,that may help to enlighten us with her knowledge.

Ok starting with a few things I think I know?
Correct me if I'm wrong, I’m still learning.
Hopefully we can debate our understandings of the subject, and learn something in the process.
Let the discussion begin.

1.A women or a man can be a witch or a wizard, neither is gender specific.

2.Witchcraft by definition is part religion and usually a sect of Paganism, although a Wizard can have any religious affiliation, Moslem, Buddest, etc., it doesn’t matter of which.

3.A Wizard differs from a Witch in that they rely more on Science and Alchemy.

4.Witches and Wizards can heal, cast spells, and break spells, use divination and prophesize the future.

Ok someone else’s turn.

.

Ken your being too kind....I am far from an expert, seeing I have always been and always will be a solitary practitioner. lol Covens just aren't my thing, too much like organized religions. I rather follow my own path and that of the Celtic side of my family.

Now with that said, let me see if I can answer these for you...lol

1.A women or a man can be a witch or a wizard, neither is gender specific

A woman or a man can be a witch. The term wizard really isn't used anymore except in fiction. In Scotland the term warlock and wizard meant the male equal to a witch way back when. In Wicca the term Warlock is used for someone who has been banished from a coven, either for revealing secrets, or for breaking Coven laws.

2.Witchcraft by definition is part religion and usually a sect of Paganism, although a Wizard can have any religious affiliation, Moslem, Buddest, etc., it doesn’t matter of which.

Ok this one is harder to explain....lol A witch can practice any religion. You (witch) choose your Deity, so it can even be the Christian, God and say Mary in place of Lady and the Lord. Lord not meaning the Christian lord....more like medieval times when you had a Lord and Lady. In Wicca you do not have to have a set Deity either...it can be the spirits of the elements or whatever feels right for you. I have in the past known witches that went to church with their family's, yet still held their own rituals and were practicing wiccans. That is a whole thread on its own some day. Not awake enough to go into it all right now...lol

A Wizard differs from a Witch in that they rely more on Science and Alchemy

Not really as most Witches use herbs, colors, stones, gems and candles. You mix different elements together for some spells. Can be as simple as different herbs to herbs, gems, ashes from different types of wood to mixing everything together in water. So in a way it is Science and Alchemy...you need to know what herbs will work together and what will make a spell or ritual stronger. More so if your into the healing end of it. You need to know what will help if you are making a healing bag. What herbs will help the sickness and all that good stuff.

Witches and Wizards can heal, cast spells, and break spells, use divination and prophesize the future.

Ok, I'm going to use me as an example on this one. Yes, I do healing, but it is done with spells and rituals. It isn't like I lay my hands on a person and they are healed. Yes, I can cast and break spells if need be. I personally have never gotten into the divination and prophesizing of the future as I don't really want to know what is ahead other then reading tarot cards. Tarot cards don't tell you what will happen, if you are looking for guidance that is what they are used for...at least I have always been taught that and it has always worked for me. They can show you a path, but you can change that path from minute to minute without realizing it. If that makes any sense to you...lol

Now no cheating and looking up the answer, my question to you or anyone else....do you know what Halloween is to most pagans...not all but to witta (the celtic side of wicca) and wiccans?

Witchie, there are mediums and intuitives who use tarot and interpret according to what they assign to the cards. Their own feelings and meanings, regardless of book teachings. Do witches read according to the book, or does that remain an individual choice, according to who is doing the reading? And re: healing.... in reiki, we're taught that heartstrings can be cut, if there's an instance of love that has become painful or unresolved. Reiki is typically referred to as the laying on of hands, but it can be done with or without touch. If your heart is feeling pain and it's not related to a spell, can you heal that?

And are you referring to All Hallows Eve? The time when the veil between here and the spirit world is the thinnest? The time when you bury an apple and hang a light so the spirits can find their way in the dark and have nourishment for their travels?

Thanks for both of your responses, although this is not my understanding.
There are schools of Wizardry in existence today, through books and also online.

wizards .... use more true alchemy .. beyond herbs and stones ... where as withches use basic alchemy .. a wizard can be male or female and use in depth alchemy ... wizardry is not based on religion where as witchcraft is
although there are many different types of magic and sorsery .... a sorcerer is a master wizard and your right wizardry is atill used today in some regions .... it's very hard to get the chemicals and plants needed for wizardry ....

wiches .. are based on different spiritual beliefs ...
dark magic .. high magic ... light magic ... wiccan ... black magic ... voo doo .. (wich is not really evil but based on religion as well) ... most are based on god or some form of christianity or anti christianity ....

most of the things you find in fantasy can be traced to real life ...... most spells , potions and powers can be found in history

There are wizards. I am one. We are decended from the Merlin lineage, focusing on healing others through divine energetic healing.

Tell me about your staff and wand?
What kind of wood did you make it out of or did you buy one already made?
Me and a friend went out to find her a Staff and a Wand in the woods the other day and she said that she liked this old dead wood in this cypress tree.
I found some fallen electrical line wire in the area that wasn't active but very ridged to throw up to snag the high tree limb to pull it down.
I kept trying to throw it but it was so ridged it seemed to have a mind of it's own and wouldn’t go were I wanted it to.
She said focus and visualize the wire going up there when I throw it, I did it and I was no longer fighting the wire and was able to throw it up the tree, very strange.

She said because the wire was responsive we should also use it on the staff.
Some may think this sounds like bunk, I can only say that I'm leaning and keeping an open mind.

I'd love to see a photo of that staff and wand when finished.

I'll be shopping for a wand this week in Salem. Can't wait to see what they're offering.

Samhain is the same general time as halloween and I believe to be a pagan religious celebration. Halloween was adapted from it. Sometimes Ken, it is your intentions that makes it work and not necessarily the wire. Focusing the mind. We use tools to focus our intentions.

Exactly! Though there are things that can hold and conduct energy... It's about intent, and 'asking the universe'. Though I have recently gotten into the energy of crystals. (Spirit, I love your knowledge. )

Also, during my trip to Salem, at the witches museum, modern day explanations of witch practices was part of the presentation. Warlocks is a derogatory term, and is not used by witches.

Some reason or other, the term Warlock is kinda sexy.

Thanks, Pam! Just about ANY skill is mind over matter. If you get at peace and think of yourself accomplishing something, it is more likely to happen. If you keep telling yourself something is impossible, then you often create that as a failure.
'Spells' are similar to miracles and very strong wishes. Magic is often something that appears to be impossible to the onlooker. People that practice 'magic' in one form or another and are successful, don't usually view it as magic after they get good at it. Instead, they may consider it a natural consequence of a well thought out goal that was envisioned and then implemented.
To me, many things that are technical are magic because I can't/won't try or do it. But to me, what I do with the creations is so easily implemented that it no longer seems magical to me.

Ken, many people that were learned in herbs were considered wise women and sometime later were considered witches. Healers have been around for centuries. Not all witches are healers and not all healers are witches. I am a healer but do not practice witchcraft nor have I any conscious memories of it.
There are many forms of miraculous things in the world in many different 'religions'. BTW, I make copper and gemstone wands. I know that wood is correct in some training and metals and stone is correct in other training.

Thanks Pam and Spirit.
Forgive me for any dumb questions that I may ask because I don't have much knowledge in this area, but wouldn't it be better to make you own wand and put your own energy into making it that could transfer into a connection with it, as opposed to buying a new one that someone else made,or buying a used one from a stranger,of whichs intent or influence on the wand is unknow.

Second , what does a wand really do, that a person with powers could not do with their hands?

The materials used in wands are often crystals. The wand doesn't have to be a big monstrosity, it can be smaller, as well. Crystals are chosen for their properties, and intent, and combined in a way that's pleasing for the user. For example, celestite, (to call your angels), quartz, (I have a twin!) and amethyst are my favorites. You might choose other elements to be part of your wand. And some of it is really decorative, unless you want the whole thing to be symbolic...
It's just a personal choice.

Ken, everyone has different beliefs so if it is your belief that it is important that only your energy goes into the wand, then it WILL be important but only because of limiting fears. The highly evolved and educated metaphysical person will know they can clear others energies with only thought and asking their higher powers to do it in seconds.
The highly ritualistic people will demand that it takes days, weeks and even months to clear energies. Well, for them it does. You would think if someone has the greatest spiritual support system available then they would not get caught up in fears that limit their lives but they are usually working with old rituals that are taught to them by books or other people that have chosen to do it the OLD ways which are very slow and limited.
I am not saying it is wrong to do it the old ways. I AM saying that there are better, faster, higher level energies and higher level beings people CAN work with. If you are not good at crafts, should you be limited to your own handicrafted wand? Or if you do not have all the info to make one that you really would love to have, should you wait however long it takes to get that perfect wand?
You can clear energies from anything with your intentions. What do you think waving sage around does? Our INTENTIONS are to dispel energies with the sage. I have seen tho, that most entites will not leave when you sage. THEIR beliefs do not hold to being dispossessed by sage. So, some things need better practices to work the best.
If you want your energies embedded in something, clear the old energies out and apply your own. Holding the wand and meditating on it and visualizing your energies flowing into it would be a good idea. Even if only you handled the 'ingredients', you would still need to clear energies from some things occasionally. Especially if you are frustrated when you are trying to make the wand come together or worrying about something in your life while you are handling it.
Some gemstones are known to absorb negative energies and should be spiritually cleansed immediately after using them and before using them. They should be recharged as well. This can be done in seconds with Spiritual help from your High Self committee or you can take weeks to do it with some of the old rituals.
Now, a wand is only a tool. It can give you something to focus on. Some stones enhance something we wish to do. Metals as well. I personally do not use a wand but I have used stones in my healing work. The stones can be programmed to heal all on their own so anyone can use them just by having them. Some have inherent healing abilities so nothing needs to be done so long as the previous owners did not accidently misuse them and discharge them.
You can do the same with your guided thoughts that a wand can do. I have no clue what a staff does. I assumed it was for walking and/or protection from brigands. Please remember, I am not a witch so do not know.
There are no dumb questions. If you are truly searching for knowledge and education, then all questions are good.

Why do so many Witches and Wizard and others that practice necromancy use demons to carry out positive spells?
Many Witches and Wizards that claim to practice high or white magic use the demons because they say it is hard to bind Angels to a task, so they will use demons, and by using mirrors and such they are protected from the negativity of the demons.

My question is, why would you ever trust and think you are protected while working with a demon.
It seems to me that you are fouling yourself.

I also wonder why they don’t try to develop the power within themselves instead of using other entities to carry out the task/spell?
