I have only been here a month, and already a Tropical Storm heading our way!
I could use some of your "expert" help here. How do I deal with this? Help my animals (cats and dog) deal with it? I went through Tropical Storm Marco MANNNNY years ago, but was much younger and stupid! (I thought it was cool)
Any and all help appreciated. I have the chain saw all gased up for the aftermath, but what do I need to do before it gets here? Besides tie down everything outside that will blow away.
Thanks, Formally Luvvy

Gas up your car in case the pumps are not working. Stock up on bottled water. Buy batteries/Flashlights Buy some can goods and make sure you have a manuel can opener. Make sure you have a well stocked first aid kit Buy some candles Taping the windows really does not work/ Plywood is youe best bet if you do not have storm shutters. Bring all items that can become projectiles inside..Lawn furniture/ Hanging plants/wind chimes etc. Incase of tornados pick an interior room( no windows, no outside walls) as a safe place. My walk in closet is my designated area. Make sure you have all the medications you need. Bring pets inside of course. Buy a weather radio for alerts and make sure you have fresh batteries for it. Be sure to have a battery powered radio to keep your self informed. Know where your important documents are located , put them in a water tight container of sorts.
Orange County public schools will be closed tomorrow.. I am sure there are other school closings as well.
Be safe everyone!!!!!!

I just found out that I have the day off. We are being advised to stay off the roads. The weather in Orlando right now is very cloudy, a bit of rain and some mild wind. Its great sleeping weather so that is what I will do.

Thank you ladies! I have done everything that you have advised, basically the same as up home for tornados. Don't worry, my pantry is very well stocked, what with what Duvvy already had, and what I brought, we don't have to worry about that, and we also have the camping stove and wood burning grill. We also just bought cat and dog food, so the critters are all ready for it too. We also always drink bottled water and just got some of that this past week end.
From the looks of the current radar, we aren't going to get much of anything. At least thats what Duvvy is telling me. He also got the day off.
Dove, looks like you are going to get a LOT of rain, and some wind.
Coqui, did you get much?
Looks like Naples is getting the worst of it.

It's good to have some type of grill in case you don't have electricity for long periods of time and if you don't have a gas stove. This way you can cook canned foods like soup and that. Also fill the tubs and sinks with water. This helps when you need to flush the toilets if for some reason the water has stopped working. Keep at least a small bottle of regular bleach on hand incase the water has become contaminated. Add 20 drops (1/4 tsp) of bleach to 1 gallon of water and let it stand for 1 hour before using.. When getting water, get at least 1 gallon of water per person per day
Also make sure that you know where your local shelters are incase you need to evacuate. Some shelters are pet friendly. These allow you to bring your pets with you. You have to also provide food for your pets. Not sure if there is a limit on how many you can bring though. They also have special needs shelters for those who are handicapped. It's good to call ahead when the numbers are posted to help you locate these shelters.
Pack at least 3 days of clothing, food for each person as well as personal items (toothbrushes tooth paste, ect) and canned food in case you do need to go to a shelter as they don't provide food. Take some games and snacks if you have children, the shelters can get rather boring for them. You can also bring along sleeping bags, blankets and pillows if you wish.
Also along with the candles and flashlights that Dove mentioned, you can get lanters and oil.
Pets have a sense of things coming. I guess the pressure has an effect on them. The pets I had when I went through a major hurricane many years ago did things like pace around. My cat meowed like she was in heat and the dog did an occasional whine. Once the hurricane started they went and laid down and slept during the whole thing. We tried to comfort them by petting them and that but it did little.
Remember to stay inside while the eye of a hurricane is passing. It may seem safe to go out, but you never know how soon the second half will come up.
The school's in Lake county will be closed today and tomorrow.
Right now the sun is shinning on and off in Leesburg. I'm sure that will change as the day goes on.
Stay safe every one.

I thank God it was a minor storm.
Have lived out all of the previous ones, not having power and water is not exactly the way to go.

All that prep work, and worry, and we spent the day outside working in the shed and yard. I am glad we were prepared though. All we got was an occassional sprinkle. Wonderful breeze all day, not hot at all. (thats saying something from this hot blooded Indiana girl)
 Thanks again ladies.

The weather right now in East Orange County is very blustery and the rain just keeps on keeping on. The trees in the yard are bending and swaying all over the place. I took my dog for a walk and walking in the wind and rain was not easy, I live about 32 miles West of Titusville and Brevard county so we are getting to feel the Wrath of Fay this evening. I am heading to Tampa tomorrow night to see the American Idol tour concert. Fay better not mess with my concert plans... or mother nature will hear from me.

Sorry to hear you have been getting a beating Dove. Looks good here for you to come for your concert tonight!
You are lucky you were able to take your dog for a walk in it. Mine won't step out the door if it is only misting... afraid to mess her hair? She has been known to "hold it", for 12 hours or more.

The wind and rain have been doing it's thing here in Leesburg. It wasn't too bad this morning, but it increased as the day went by. Not so much rain, but the wind is pretty good. Nothing down in the yard that I know of. As of right now the wind is starting to be less fequent. I'll be glad when it's over with.
My cat keeps running under the bed and my sister's dog is afraid to get her feet wet....lol
Hope that you have a great time at the concert Dove.

That Fay sure is a crazy lady. I just saw that she's headed back again.
Stay safe and dry, everyone...and you're welcome to send your extra water out here to Nevada -- please.

honestly.. this storm is nothing... i am actually disappointed.. i have been here 3 years.. this is my first... i live on beachside ormond beach between flagler and daytona... just be ready for the rain... keep ur animals with you.. and try to keep things as normal as possible.. from what i gather.. she has lost alot of her luster as she has traveled so many miles..
i wish you the best of luck.. and just continue to pay attention to the local news, radars and ur gut
best of luck :)

I know we needed the rain, but jeez it can stop now anytime would be nice. I swear I need to grow feathers and some webbed feet!! Wouldn't be so bad if I was working during the day, but working all night in the rain really bites!!
Anyway, glad to see everyone came through this little rain maker without any problems!

Everyone gave you great advice about the storm and for future hurricanes.. One thing I would add is to freeze tons of water in plastic or stainless steel mixing bowls, so if the power goes out, you have tons of ice to keep your food from going bad. And if frozen in opened plastic (drink some of or pour out a tadge first or don't fill all the way) water bottles, you can later drink it when needed.
Faye was a real pain for us here in Jax. We had the real flooding Friday and a mess. Power lines and cables down. 80,000 folks were without power for awhile, not sure how long for that many. My guy friend was without power for four days.
So, it could have been worse and all.
