Floridians during past hurricane seasons, what did you do when a hurricane was predicted to hit your area ?
A. Evacuate to the nearest shelter
B. Seek shelter in the comfot of your home
C. Party with friends while "riding the storm out"
D. Other (Please explain)
Would love to hear past hurricane season stories for all willing to share !

D) Other
After securing the house after the first warning of a impeding storm, I turn off the news programs and only watched them when I wanted a update on the storm (which was once a day since the media goes nuts in OVER DOING it on the coverage) and watched some video tapes of tv shows I recorded over a 3 ~ 8 week time (since I work and didnt have time to watch them when they originally aired) and relaxed and waiteded for the storm to pass

I am a native floridan that lost my home during hurricane wilma last october...Best thing anybody can do if a storm is coming you way is to get out of the path of it...Let me tell you I lived through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and all the storms that have hit south Florida since...They are not pleasant and being drunk doesn't help when you home is being blown to pieces.

My answer would be "B"...as in I "B"attened down the hatches and stayed put in the house...during both Wilma and Katrina. ...and Frances and Jeanne.. let's not forget about them too. Dang, when I recall the hurricanes I've lived through, I feel like I'm calling a freaken role!
BTW, Clare, I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your home.:( You have my utmost sympathies..! I hope you were able to, at least, recover precious and irreplaceable things, such as your family photos..

I have to agree, have been through many hurricanes, if you live in a mobile home or live on the coast, you need to leave, but it you live in a solid home, stay......

Last year was my first.
We did option C). Threw pretty much everything in the house on the grill for the first couple of days, after that we were stuck with canned foods and whatever we could get at the few stores that opened.

Well with the big deal that the local weather people make of a hurricane and how they constantly repeat themselves to the point where you are sick and tired of hearing about it.You sort of just want to forget about the hurricane and escape into a tv show for awhile but that is impossible with the constant interruptions of your tv shows with special reports every 1 to 3 minutes to let you know that the storm has moved 3 feet since the last special report.
And those special reports take up to 10 minutes from start to finish before they FINALLY return you to the show. Thats why I would rather watch my video tapes of shows I have been recording over the past few weeks and watch them instead of the panic striken weather people where I can forget about the storm for awhile and relax. IF I want to check on the storm, I'l stop the vcr and click on any of the local channels to get a quick update on the storm.

If its a small storm or a likelyhood of a indirect hit from a large storm just hunker down.
If its a large storm with a resonable probability of a direct hit leave the area [hope you dont get stuck in traffic and LEAVE EARLY.]
If all else fails you can always pull your pants down and kiss your butt good bye.

The last hurricane we had go through ,it came out after crossing the state around spring hill [was it Frances or Jean?],me and my girl friend went out walking in the middle of it only for about 5 minutes but it was very cool experiance ill never forget.

A local radio show in Orlando " The Shannon Burke Show " on 104.1 Has a Hurricane Fantasy game going not unlike Fantasy Foot Ball. Although Hurricanes are serious business I thought this was kinda cool . You pick four Hurricanes from the list.
http://shannon.wtks.com/hurricane_fantasydraft.html
Fantasy Draft Categories and Rules
Scoring for the Fantasy Hurricane Draft has been divided into 9 categories and points are scored in all of those categories and then added together. At the end of the Hurricane season, every player's total points will be added from all 4 of their hurricanes, and a winner will be declared. The categories are as follows:
Intensity- Points are awarded based on what category of storm your Hurricane is. A category 1 storm is 10 points, a category 2 is 20 points and so on.
Damage- 1 point will be awarded for every 10 million dollars in property damage caused by your storm.
Evacuation- 20 points will be awarded for every state that has a mandatory evacuation issued because of your storm.
States- 10 points will be awarded for every state hit by your storm, while your storm is still classified as a hurricane.
FEMA- 20 points will be awarded if FEMA is called in to help because of your storm.
Officials- 10 points will be awarded for every state governor that comes in to view the damage caused by your storm. If the president comes to a state hit by your storm, it is 20 points.
International- 10 points will be awarded for every foreign country hit by your storm.
Deaths- 10 points will be SUBTRACTED from your total for every 100 people killed by your storm.
Home Field- Since we live in Florida, is our state is hit by your storm 10 points will be SUBTRACTED from your total if our state is hit.
*Finally If your storm damages the home of any other member of the show who is involved in the hurricane fantasy draft, you have offically bitch slapped said show member, and are declared the automatic victor. End of game.

O.K....that is so sick...it's AWESOME!!!!
I have a weird sense of humor...but have spent several hurricanes in different places and experienced everything from the hurricane party atmosphere to some very serious..."are we going to survive?" experiences...and since i have survived...as have friends and other loved ones...i have to try and find humor in the whole hurricane thing...or it gets worrisome and depressing

If we bring some levity to a scary situation it lightens things up , as long as we never forget the fury of nature. Leave it to Shannon Burke and his crew to think this up.
