for clairification purposes, this is the georgia state flag :

it's similar to the original first official flag of the confederacy which is often referred to as 'the stars and bars':

this is the confederate battle flag that was referenced by the original poster:

they are different flags.
(sometimes a picture's worth a thousand words, especially when people start talking apples and oranges )

I just wanted to comment that I'm from Ohio, have traveled to but never lived in the
South. I did just complete a history course on the US up to and including the Civil
War. I am not offended by the Confederate flag and I see it as part of Southern
Heritage not a symbol to condone or promote slavery.

The whole point is that it is offensive to others. I am neither pro or con this flag issue. However if one caters to the whims of those that are offended by this or that to appease them then one would need to do nothing at all for something that one does will always offend someone. Therefore to thine own self be true and don't be concerned with the offensive whims of others just as they are not concerned about what offends the one.

I see no problem with the confederate battle flag except this..
it certain places here in my area, it can cause alot of strife.. people waving that flag on their cars and in their yards are asking for some trouble whether they realize it or not. So.. knowing that flag offends alot of folks here, I personally would not fly it .. I'm not gonna go looking for trouble if I can help it.. JMHO

two years ago here in Jones County during the July 4th parade, The Georgia Battle flag was carried during the parade . If it is carried with respect , fly the flag. If you are flying the flag to instigate trouble, then you have no right to fly the flag. People have the freedom to show respect for those who fought and died in the Civil War.

What everyone seems to be forgetting is that the flag is just a piece of cloth. It is up to each person individually how they interpret its meaning. I personally do not have a problem with the flag and I have lived in Georgia my entire life. My high school mascot was the conferderate Rebel and the confederate battle flag was flown every day at our high school. Our fight song was "Dixie". I see it as a symbol of my teenage years and my life in high school. I know of its greater meaning and what it was used for and the history behind it and all of that. That is why I also respect the flag. If you were to come down here where I am most people feel the same way I do. (I said most) However, your view of the flag is your own personal opinion and people should respect that. There is no right or wrong. Just an interpretation.

The simple fact is that the Stars and Bars are as much of a symbol of our Southern heritage as the Battle Flag. You see the Battle Flag a lot but you rarely see the Stars and Bars. The reason is that the Stars and Bars doesn't piss anyone off. The flag we have today is very similar to the one we had up until the late 1950's. The Battle Flag emblem was added when people in Washington started talking about equal rights for Blacks. It was like adding a white hood to your state flag. Some of the locals didn't like the thought of removing the Battle Flag from the Georgia flag 10 or 12 years ago. They put bumper stickers on their trucks with the St. Andrew's Cross (Rebel flag) and the phrase "Heritage, not Hate". So we got our old flag back (basically the flag of the Confederacy) and they were all like "oh HELL no!" There goes your heritage argument. The Rebel flag is flown to piss off Blacks and start fights.

I personally like the original Georgia State Flag, not just because I am a native Atlantan,(born and bred in Georgia), but it represents an idea, a concept of a time that though it has passed, still needs to be taken into account. Some people find the Confederate Flag to be offensive. Me, am of the attitude that if we forget our past, we repeat our mistakes. And if we remove a piece of history, that is just begging for the mistake to be repeated. And to totally remove a piece of history, in my opinion, is sacreligious. There are people of the opinion that the statue, "David", should have clothing put on it. There are people that think the Cyclorama should be done away with, Stone Mountain also. Think, people! Yes, lets stamp out injustice, bigotry, and all the hateful things that lessens us as a people. But to erase the history, that is just wrong. Taken in its proper context, history teaches, and reminds us of just how far we have come. So YES. These flags are a turn on for me.
