Secondly, I am kinda new to MD… a friend told me about this site.. from what I have seen over the past month or so, everyone seems like a big family here… so I am hoping for a bit of help here… A friend has asked me how do you deal with your adult child (22 yrs old) that has come home to tell you that they are dating a second cousin.. Totally devastating news to the mother but she tells him how much she loves him although its not right in her eyes… Their dad is not doing well at all with this and their son is staying away from the house I think just so he doesn’t have to face the parents… All children should be loved unconditionally and sometimes that means not agreeing with their actions but loving anyways...what do you do or say? i am sure this happens but is it really ok?   Jan 2 @ 10:41 AM advice welcome     MsAir1948 Posts: 2 Well at least it is not a first cousin.. that is the good part. Secondly, in most states second cousins can marry. Is it right or wrong? That is up to each individual. It is okay for the parents to state their opposition to the couple however when it gets down to it.. loving unconditional means to accept it as a love between the two. Society has changed over the years and older parents such as I are still living with the morals our parents taught us and that is cousins shouldn't be in love. I would advise the two however to check into the effects of their union and the effects it would have on any subsequent children. The more opposition these parents give these kids the more the two will cling together. Let it ride it's course and create the least amount of friction as possible. All I ever wanted for my children was whoever they ended up with that that person make them happy. If he/she is happy then feel blessed. They could end up beaten or abused which would be much worse than a second cousin as a son/daughter in law. Just my two cents worth. Happy New Year to you also and I hope all works out for everyone.
