I was wondering if anyone here has experienced a deep platonic love for someone of the opposite sex. I did once. She passed away ten years ago and I still miss her.

Of course. I have many truly close friends of the opposite sex. They are my extended family, brothers or cousins and even some uncles, and are great source of both comfort and joy.
I cannot imagine living my life without them. For as Richard Bach wrote:
"The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life."

Excellent quote Sci, and Aries I am sorry to hear that your friend passed away. To answer your question, yes. I am lucky for my friends of any gender, race or creed. The quote Sci has, I find, is most certainly true.

Love the quote, Sci!!
I, too, have many friends of the opposite sex. My best friend is male. People are people, regardless of their statistics.

Absolutely so...friends are the family we've chosen for ourselves. If nobody else ever said it, they should have. And yes, I have male friends that I can talk about anything with (and I do flirt with a couple of them outrageously...well, maybe more than a couple). The friendships aren't the same as friendships with other women, but they do have the same basis of love and trust and honesty.

Mine was more than friendship. It was more like soulmates. If she had not been so sick from diabetes..... I wonder.

Through out life we all meet people whom we grow close to and love in a platonic way. I have had a few both men and woman and some have passed and it does feel like you lose a member of your family and I will always miss them.

I do not think that it is what is imply by platonic love. Platonic would be the opposite of physical, of course you may wish to have sex with your extended family, brothers or cousins and even some uncles, but that would be an other topic. Platonic love refer to a romantic inclination not physically consume
