Why do women always ask men if certain clothing makes them look fat?

I never understood this, especially since if you say yes, they always get pissed off.
Is it just an unwritten rule that you HAVE to lie and say, "No honey, you look awesome in that!" Next time that happens I'll just do what that guy in the Snickers bar commercial did.
Ladies, please explain.

Actually it's a truth thing. If you are willing to tell her the truth when you know you may get your ass kicked, chances are you'll be honest about other things. I hated it when my ex said "yeah you look fine" as in ok. bleck!

It is because they have already looked at themselves and determined that it does make them look fat. They only ask us because they are hoping for a better 2nd opinion.

Hmm...or just because they want you to LOOK at them? I prefer to ask which of two items he prefers...then, I always choose the opposite.

Men are just deliberately speading that "does my butt look big?" myth to further their cause...
