Wow, night, that is an awesome one, too. A man who gave up being king for the love of a woman.

Judging from both popularity/experience and the status of her last BF - Mary Magdalene is obviously the winner among female greatest lovers , don't you agree?
Males ...I dunno ...though..wait a minute, what was the name of this British crownprince who denounced his throne to marry an alien divorcee ? Now, that's quite a man . I bet any woman would not resist such a passion.

Nightowl001 (I could have said Dante and Beatrice.) Night, there's a difference between "admirer" and "lover" ... Dante and Beatrice never were lovers ,he admired her from afar ...all his lifetime. That's , surely, sort of sweet ,( which woman doesn't enjoy her admirers, after all? ) , but it's a different topic altogether , this (great) guy is not qualified for this particular contest ....
And, capital, in the Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson case it's rather Wallis who should be nominated - for igniting the prince's passion to the extent which never can be topped .
What I'm trying to say is - it looks like ANYONE can be the greatest lover ...with the right partner...

I understand your perpective, Newlife. I guess I don't necessarily believe physical intimacy requisite to being "lovers." I consider someone who loves with great intensity a great lover, whether or not that is reciprocated or consumated. Although she knew him socially, Beatrice's feelings about Dante are only known through her fictional characterizations and may have been solely in his mind, wherein his affections were returned.
I remember someone on a country music show on television talking about Faith Hill and her husband, Tim McGraw. The commentator said "Look at that look in her eyes. She'd live with that guy in a tent!" My view of Wallis Simpson is comparble. She could have said, "Oh, no. When I loved you it was BECAUSE you were king." But despite his abdication, she stayed by his side. I thought that made that situation much more mutual, but no less devoted on either part.

newlife2006 .... never were lovers ,he admired her from afar ...all his lifetime. That's , surely, sort of sweet ,( which woman doesn't enjoy her admirers, after all?) I should warn you against those "admirers", newlife. Not all of them are really "platonic" , those who are not after sexual favors from other men's wives are more likely than not after their husbands' money. I happen to know a couple of guys who made their fortunes this partcular non-esteemed way ( marrying /divorcing several ex-wives of well-to-do men) It's easy, though , to check if the guy's "admiration" is phony or not . Just try to tell him that you are "madly in love with him" , cannot wait to get together , so TOMORROW you are getting fast no-fault divorce , leave all the property to your soon-to-be-ex husband and move-in with the admirer. Then just sit back and observe the guy's reaction . I bet most of them will say : " hey , what about half of your husband's money/property ? you have legal rights ,honey, don't let him out so easy , I can wait .I'll make preparations for our fabulous wedding and exotic honeymoon trip in the meantime."

Who do you think would be the greatest lover of all time and why?
love is an emotion..opposed to sex which is a physical act
based on this premise we are all great lovers,.... (or at least potentionally)

"history is nothing more than agreed upon lies". Napoleon as opposed to prophecy. that is the only sure place to make certain judgements about the quality of the relationships spoken of there.
