What is an introvert and why are some people introverted?

An inwardly drawn person that is primarily concerned with their own thoughts and feelings. Not having an outgoing personality, shy, etc. Introverts comprise about 25% of the population. Why being introverted? It's not a choice, but an orientation. Also because of one's own brain chemistry and how one's own neuro transmitters work.

Contrary to what most people think, an introvert is not simply a person who is shy. In fact, being shy has little to do with being an introvert! Shyness has an element of apprehension, nervousness and anxiety, and while an introvert may also be shy, introversion itself is not shyness. Basically, an introvert is a person who is energized by being alone and whose energy is drained by being around other people.
Introverts are more concerned with the inner world of the mind. They enjoy thinking, exploring their thoughts and feelings. They often avoid social situations because being around people drains their energy. This is true even if they have good social skills. After being with people for any length of time, such as at a party, they need time alone to "recharge."

Apparently it IS something one can overcome, but I found this interesting from How to Go from Introvert to extrovert
* Overvaluing online socializing. Online socializing has its place in your life, but it’s a pale shadow compared to face-to-face, belly-to-belly communication. Voice and body language can communicate a lot more than text, and emotional bonds are easier and faster to establish in person. I feel much closer to the local friends I’ve known for only a few months than I do to the people I’ve known online for years but never met in person. It’s just not as fun going out to dinner with a laptop. You don’t have to do away with online socializing, but don’t allow it to crowd out meeting people locally. If you do that, you’ll only cause your interpersonal skills to lag further behind.
If you have some of these blocks and want to get past them, the first step is to acknowledge them and consider how they’re holding you back. Then begin to work on them just as you would any other challenge in your life. Focus your intentions, set goals, make plans, and start taking action. It may be awkward and clumsy at first, but just accept that, and get moving anyway.

I'm myself is a shy person. I didn't choose it, I believe I was born this way. I'm more talkative than I used to be but still shy. In real life I don't talk very much. I don't feel like my life is horrible in any way, just because I spend alot of time by myself doesn't mean I'm depressed, I'm actually more depressed being around a huge crowd of people then a small crowd.

to be introvert is not a choice, it's a characteristic of our personality...we can be in that way or we cannot be.
as for all assets and shortages we can work on it to improve us
In general I'm a shy person, but when I find someone very confortable to me I immediately change and I become more extrovert and chatterer
I'm usually a good listener and writer ( an Italian writer )

There's nothing wrong with being introverted, people! It is not a psychological disorder! And, being introverted doesn't mean you eek out some pitiful lonely existence! As previously stated, it is simply a characteristic of one's personality...just one facet of many.

It most definitely is a choice and not nesscarily and primarily only thoughts of ones self, although we are selfish by nature it is an instinct, ever try to take food from a dog !! We are orientated from birth a growing living multi complex variable machine with choices. One of my Human nature must reads, Intimate Behaviour by Desmond Morris .

OK, I live alone but hate it, sometimes shy but most times not, love friendly groups. grave affection from a single lover, very intelligence but wild brain chemistry my neuro transmitters according to some female MD members are "in the gutter", I care how I look , hate getting old, exercise daily, love to talk or listen AND I AM LOOKIN FOR A DANG GIRLFRIEND. Any gal interested Im me or email me. Profile of an extrovert...I think.

Hi, my name is Eyes............I, too, am an extrovert. I was quite relieved to see that being introverted is not a choice..........was afraid introverts just didn't want to be like us.

I, for one, am an introvert. While I do have good social skills I prefer to be alone (with son of course) or with a small group of people And, yes, I am introspective and that is not a bad thing.
