I think sharing similar values seems to be the primary key.
The rest seems to work itself out if that foundation is strong.

Seriously, though, Juday, I think awareness and creativity helps keep a relationship on a 'growth' path. There's nothing more frustrating and boring than keeping things static. BOTH parties need to keep things interesting and not be afraid to express and share their feelings: the old "communication" thing again.
