Some people say "don't settle" but really don't we have to in some way, I mean unless your standards are really low. We can't have everything we want. So what does settling really mean?
If I had to say what I really wanted in a man ( he has to be taller then 5'10, slim, funny, smart, creative, goodlooking, honest, romantic, have no crazy ex women, under the age of 42 but over the age of 28, must love children, understanding, likes to listen, sweet, sarcastic, love to plan things, spontaneous, I'm sure there's much more...) and stuck to that without settling for anything less.. I might say single for the rest of my life.

I don‘t think you can decide whether someone has “settled” or not unless you can define their perfect partner.
I have some ideas about what I like and don’t like in a woman, but I don‘t have an precision idea of what a “perfect“ partner would be.
There is a range of perfect in almost every aspect. And everyone is a unique individual with different combinations of qualities.
And sometimes, it’s the imperfections that make the perfect partner.
So how could I even tell if I am “settling?”

To me "settling" refers to entering a relationship with someone that you know just isn't right, but you do it anyway. Usually because you're desperate or succumbing to loneliness.

I agree with the shield, settling is getting into a relationship just so you won't be alone. Taking the first person that will have you.
OP, when I read your list of must have's, I can agree that you will probably remain single forever. It's unrealistic to demand things that your partner has no control over, such as "no crazy ex women", how could anyone know whether an ex is going to be bizarre?

I just meant that I don't want my window bashed in because of an ex women. Or normally you have dated lots of women who went to jail because of stalking or battery charges . I think you know if your ex is dangeruos or not.
So if I accept someone in my life that isn't everything I want... Thats not settling?

No, I'd call that compromising, the person may not be what your ideal is in one area, but far exceed what you want in another. Your man may be everything you want, except slim, for example. Will you give up 99% of what you want over that one thing? No one is perfect, or perfect for you. The trick is to find the one who is closest to perfect.
You don't want to settle, but you'll have to compromise.

It's called settling because that's what it is. If you enter into a relationship with someone who you know you will not be happy with, that is indeed "settling" and it is not right for you to do that...
