Why do people need to do this? Is this a convenience so that people who are developing a connection with them are unaware that they are looking around at other people's profiles? Who needs or uses this option?

I did it until I realized I could turn off the IM feature. I hate trying to type with that damn little popup popping up I'm not a fan of IM or any other type of chatting...just not my thing.

I don't need nor do I use this option..Hell I have a hard enough time getting people to write me when I'm visible..Let alone upping the stakes and not letting anyone know I'm here.

Hey Pete, with the instant messaging feature available, perhaps some log in as invisible so as not to get messaged. Maybe just want to browse the forums, but don't feel like chatting? I am not talking about myself, just taking a stab at the question.

If there were some way to set it so that only "Friends" could IM me, that would be one thing. But I'm on dialup at home, and when every fella in the country IM's me just because I'm online, it becomes seriously annoying...!

I agree with Danae.
Unwanted and relentless messaging is more of nuisance for women than men, and some people just don’t want to be constantly bothered.
I remember Match had IM for a trial period and I absolutely hated it. Sometimes I just wanted to sit back and read profiles, but I’d get some IM’s asking “what’s up?” and if I didn’t respond back I mean RIGHT THEN I got some nasty message saying I was probably messaging other women and playing the field. Yeah, right.
I kept mine off for the duration. I’m still not a big IM fan and hardly use my MSN and Yahoo Messengers.

OK, well that kinda explains it - I never use IM so I was unaware of the advantage. I can onlyimagine what it would be like for you beautiful women trying to enjoy the forums with some "Hay baby - how u duin" crap popping up every minute or two.
I just hear sometimes about people who are pissed because they've been emailing someone and then discovered that he's online on the dating site - as if that's a crime or something. I'm just wondering if the invisible option is to cover one's tracks.

I log on as invisible sometimes but it's usually because I'm hiding from a stalker. Ive noticed that e-mail stalkers don't seem to use the forums and I can be invisible but obviously online in the forums.

There's an option to turn off IM on the home page...
On topic - never saw a need to hide!

Well, it didn't say who it's from. All I got was a message bar that said my browser had blocked an IM for me. Not as annoying as a pop-up.
And yes, Wanda, I have a sense of humor. Don't make me prove it to ya.

Hi PP,
Guilty as charged.
I use it for a really good reason. I don't want the men searching the online pages and seeing me being on here for hours at a time. It makes it look like I'm desperately seeking 'whoever', searching frantically through their profiles.
When I first came back to this site recently, I had no clue abouth the forums, and chat, and I would see the same men online repeatedly. The 'above' I stated is exactly what I was thinking about them. My thought was, if they are searching for a woman w/ such fervor, there must be something off-kilter w/ them.
Little did I know, they were hanging out in the forum/chat.
Now, yo comprende.
