Okay gonna go here with this.. *sigh*
If when you meet and they are attracted to you AS IS and you change .. DRASTICALLY  then you have portrayed yourself as someone else basically LYING to that person to attract them kinda like a used car salesman... *oh yeah buddy aint she pretty?? she runs smooth" and lures you into buying this car . and as you drive it off the lot everything seems fine.. after a month the car slowly falls apart things that were merely glued in place instead of bolted on ...fall off and are lost on the hwy... till at some point it stops moving and taking you anywhere ...you are stuck with something that was NOT what it seems and there is no way to find those lost parts and repair it ..  but now as a bit of a car nut im gonna use the inverse of this to explain.. you go to a used car lot you buy a *JUNKER* .. why?? because you see the beauty in what COULD BE what can become of such a treasure and you are not led to believe it is any more than it already is .. but you KNOW it is what YOU want none the less.. and then you take it home nurture it and the junker becomes a Classic valued far above just a physical thing because you have put yourself into the mix and helped it grow and loved it for what it was and what it has become and because it never claimed to be anything more than what it was ....

You stated it perfectly...what is to bad is that not everyone thinks that way or can even understand what it takes to be value and cherish something to make it last.. " for all time".

Hun, I wasn't being angry and I'm sorry if I came across that way because it was not my intent. I was just giving Beach an opinion......... hey maybe my opinion can take a hike to a high cliff and fall off. 
See here's what happened to me with a woman that I dated in the early to mid 1990's, she kind of did just that. She may have got bored with our relationship and started poking at me, trying to get me to be different or end it. Towards the end she started saying stuff like - don't you want to date other people? Also: I only meant for you to be a fling the night that I met you........ and a bunch of other crap like that.
I am pretty sure that she wanted out. I tried to keep it going and strong, but I believe that she had her lust set on some other, newer prospect.
I hope that she is in relationship hell right now........

I have to admit I am guilty of trying to change the ex somewhat. But my reason is that I got tired of him showing up for dates wearing his workshirt with his name on it! So I did buy him a few different shirts--but I got them at Goodwill so didn't spend much. Of course, he still would show up in the dang workshirt! But it's over now so I'm not going to worry about it. Maybe I wasn't actually trying to change him as much as give him some other options.

Remember, we are talking about WIMMEN.
If you have ever moved a sofa for one, you'd know what I mean. You and I can pick out an outfit for a hot date in three minutes. Your hot date will think about what she's gonna wear for three fuggin days.
Have you ever watched one pack for a trip?!? If you told her that she may only pack what she can carry through a busy airport, and be ready to go tomorrow, she'd have a stroke.
When they start that "we need to talk" stuff, you look'em dead in the eye and say "it is what it is." Let her sort out who you are and whether she digs it. It's a her problem, not a you problem.
