I think just going with the flow is the best thing to do.
it's great when 2 people can go out and talk about whatever. No plan, no scripted questions.
If 2 people just sit in silence...well, JMHO there is a problem.

just a thought...( it has been stated already....) actions speak louder than words..
 why is is important to ask questions first..? IMO.. listening is more important to get to know someone... but failing to ask about points that are not clear usually means the relationship is doomed ........

Yes....I think listening is an art form....you would be surprised how much you really can get to know about a person by just listening. Most of the dates I have been on have been just sitting and listening quietly. They usually walk away and feel better about themselves.... but the drawback is....they don't know anything about me.... 
I think I missed my calling.....

I believe one should let the conversation takes its natural course, as opposed to playing the "20 Questions" game. Most often people will reveal a part of themselves during the course of normal conversation. It takes time to get know someone really well. (JMO)

Actually when you read this whole thread it seems many here have a script to life and living but obviously it doesnt work. there are no particular answers that fit all. there is no one stop solution for all people. I think the most basic fundamental in any social atmosphere is to have good social skills. Now that doesnt neccessarily constitute the gift of gab but, a comfortability in who you are.

There are none!
There is only the illussion we want to create about ourselves which forces us not to be truthful about who we really are. When was the last time you heard someone say I am a liar, or a troll, or insecure, or obcessive ect....? But I can bet you a dollar to a donut these same people when asked gave you answers from utopia for which you later found to be less than accurate. Many of us veiw the world through rose colored glasses in an attempt to paint our own existence as one of openess and righteousness. We use code words like compatibility, taste, preference, and a whole host of other nobilities to hide our personal issues.
If you really want to get to now someone well?
Take the time to!
Put the effort in!
And be true to yourself before all others.!
50 questions later you still know nothing about the person.
Were they lying or telling the truth?

I can't remember asking a lot of questions. Just talk, talk, and listen, listen.
I am a listener. I can talk, ( or as I call it "babble"), but I am a good listener to the things that aren't said.
