As long as my SO and I are together it stays long. If I go first I'll be buried with long hair (or more likely, cremated with it). If he goes first, I'd probably cut it right after the funeral. I find it really annoying - always in my way, but when he plays with it, it's all worth it.

P.S. my hair was short when we met...it's well below my shoulders now - I had problems with breakage at first but I found that the Pantene 'Beautiful Lengths' shampoo and conditioner stopped that cold. I've also gone from store-bought red to my natural brunette - I'm still mostly brunette but my 'white wings' have grown out for some time now. I can still cover them depending on how I wear my hair, but I actually kind of like them.

This is something I've always wondered about myself. I don't know why so many women in the 40-50'ish age range get rid of their longer locks. I guess it is a rite of passage as the original poster said. Maybe women just get tired of maintaining longer hair as they get older. I happen to think their are many older women who still look hot with a longer than neck length do'. Oh, and I hate when they get those butch manly short cropped haircuts. Those are ugly.

I hate to say this but I'm almost at that milestone....4.....4.....I can't bring myself to say it..... but having "sort of" admitted that, my hair is down to my butt and I like it.
