Hi, I couldn't help but notice that if a guy is near a girl, sometimes the girl would automatically reach into her bag and pull out a mobile phone and start punching keys in, or start calling someone.
Could this be a sign of flirting? My logic is that they want to appear as sociable/desirable.
It happened to me today, and I made the mistake of NOT approaching her, and I never managed to satisfy my curiosity =(

Could this be a sign of flirting? Uhhh, probably not. Smiling at you, starting conversation with YOU. Yes. I would be more inclined to think she was either bored or trying to avoid talking to you-sorry.
She probably had it on vibrate and received a text. Or not.

I would just think she was calling someone...Then again you never know...Some people like to be on their phones constantly so they can appear to be having important conversations...
...However if I'm using the phone I am calling someone. Next time say hi to her. IF she doesn't answer you...She wasn't flirting.

If its me, I am avoiding you. If it were my son's g/f, she is texting her BFF saying she sees a hot guy and to get to her location asap. lol So I think it depends on the generation.

it could be many things a. shes bored or her friend went to the bathroom... b. she wants to look important c. she is trying to appear distant in the sense of hard to get (semi flirting) a lot of people dont interrupt you, or think its rude to approach you while you are on your phone. you look preoccupied. d. she wants nothing to do with you.
the only way to figure this one out is to talk to her. if she cuts the convo short you know she wanted nothing to do with you.
if im out at the bar and the person im with goes to the bathroom or leaves for a moment, i play on my phone. i feel it makes me unapproachable. I am married and have no interest in playing the "game"

...or, she may just be "emergency texting" a pal to tell her about how this creepy guy with buck teeth and flies buzzing around his head is approaching her!

Sounds more like she wanted something to do so she could avoid talking to you. The cellphone could also be a device for someone who is too shy to talk to you. In the early days of cellphoning, having one was a status symbol. In the early nineties one researcher went into a busy British pub and found that forty percent of the cellphones sitting next to the various men at the bar were fake phones. But nowadays even kids all have their own cells, so those who still think it is a status symbol have not yet caught up with the times.

yep I agree with ^^^^^
I always use my phone when I don't want to be approached. Unless of course he's really hot. I think that last happened in 1977.

Last year a guy here in Oregon was caught on videotape screwing a horse in a stable. I wonder if he has committed suicide yet.

thanks for confirming my suspicions. Maybe as opposed to just judging by the act itself, it could be interpreted as part of a combination of body languages?
