Thoughtful, romantic or practical gifts?

I have always been very practical, never really had the money to buy others real expensive gifts, but I do always want them to be enjoyed, something they will use, and not be a dust collector or a item in a future garage sale.

I can see where many women would think I may not be romantic ( enough ).

So, let me ask you ladies what you all think about a couple gifts I have given in the past, these may or may not have the only gift I gave, but the ones that stand out in my mind.

One gift I gave was a remote car starter, winters here in Michigan can get quite severe, and just walking out to start the car, can be real pain in the ass.

Now, is this too practical, and not romantic enough? Or, was it a gift that she can use, and something she may not have gotten for herself ?

I can see this thread going a few different directions, the gifts that should have never been given, and those that you have enjoyed giving/received , and also those gifts that some would like, and others would dread to open.

I am a practical person too, Blue and I for one would appreciate a remote car starter....I also love gifts that are well thought out, handmade even...something that someone cared enough to take the time to choose for me. Anyone can buy flowers or candy.. that takes what? 2 minutes?? that would say to me.. "I almost forgot to buy you a gift, so here's some flowers and perfume that I rushed to buy at the last minute so you wouldn't be pissed at me"

Good thread Blue.. hope you're doing well and Happy Holidays

Blue - my remote car starter was the best gift I ever received (as I just hit it to go out shopping!) I personally appreciate a gift much more if there is thought that goes into - I always knew when my ex forgot until the last minute - that is when I got jewelry - it was on his way home ! ! Would I be happy with a vaccum cleaner - probably not quite that practical. If it comes from the heart - its perfect

It is really difficult to find a gift that is both useful and romantic. Something close might be one of those snuggy robes wrapped around a box of chocolate.

I think that's a great gift for someone in the north, Blu!!!

You have to think about the person you're giving the gift to and whether or not she would more appreciate a romantic gift or appreciate a practical gift more. I think the car starter is both, because it shows that you are taking care of her and want her to stay warm, etc.

The perfect gift! You were being thoughtful and sweet thinking about the cold. Romantic because you were really paying attention to her daily life!

Practical gifts are good, Blue. I appreciate them but I also appreciate little things like phone calls to check on me, little notes left where I can find them, anything that has thought put into it to show that the person cares about me.

Practical, but still personal, gifts impress me.

A while back, I received a hand-hewn wooden box nestling a dozen jars of home-made jam and chutney.

I can't imagine anyone topping such a gift...but I await an equal effort.

Last year I gave a 13 year old girl ( a family friend who is like a niece ) a porcelain bowl with coal in it....... The look on her face was priceless, she tried very much to be polite, and sit and smile with a shit eating grin on her face, then I asked what else was in there, she found a gift card to one of her favorite stores tucked nicely under the lumps of coal.

Just handing her the card seemed so impersonal, combine that with me being my typical smart ass self, and I hope she will remember that Christmas throughout her life. What did she buy > I have no idea, and it doesn't matter, all I know is.... it was something she picked out for herself.

I also like buying a pair of really soft flannel jammies for the woman in my life.

Are they sexy, no....... not really, but as I see her just warm and comfy I know what is really sexy, is what is underneath....

.

...For women, it is easy... If it "shines," or it "smells good," all is well.

...For my ex, a shiny new Lincoln, delivered with a big bow on the hood always seemed to be about right.

If you're my guy, give me something of romance! I have a perfectly good vacuum cleaner, dust buster, and garage door opener.
But the best gift I ever got from a romantic partner was not anything wrappable at all, and did not come at Christmastime.

From anyone else, let a gift be practical for me.

Most people know I am a NASCAR Fan. And many years ago my driver was Rusty Wallace, after a few years I had enough stuff to start my own ebay store.

I had, rugs, light switches, pencils, popcorn tins, jackets, tee shirts, hats, pajamas, gym bags, posters, I can go on and on, it became too much. Most of these things are now dust collectors, if I still have them at all.

How many presents have you ever gotten that you simply wore them out ? Instead of gotten bored with them?

I like things that last, not like the decoration you have to pull out of the closet every time someone shows up at your home.... You know what I'm talking about.... .

I have gotten some wonderful gifts in my life...some spring to mind.. my nephew for like my 26th birthday or so got a sienna print framed in old western motif of my favorite actor.. Clint there are pics of me with the biggest shit eating grin and until I lost it to the fire it was always displayed in my home ...Me, I am both a romantic gify lover and a practical gift lover .. I loved my new puter I got one year and I also loved the sapphire and diamond ring I got another... its all about that person KNOWING what you would really like.. yanno?? the simplest gift can bring me to tears if the thought is behind it.. heh.. just ask Mac for some dern reason I start tearing up when he does something sweet lately.. guess im just grateful to have found such a wonderful man

I like all 3 types of gifts...Because either way they express that someone cared about you enough to get something for you...

...I'm happy with anything. Just the fact that someone cares is enough for me.
