I can't let someone else define me, if i did, who would I believe, the few that don't like me[most are in the political thread], or the more that do?
So no, I don't rely on others to define me.
Possibly "my definition" is not something I think very much about in relation to how others see me.
Should others perception of you really effect your decisions and actions in life?
I don't worry if my car shiny enough so I look successful to my neighbors, I don't worry if these people think I'm poor becuase I ride my bicycle all over the place?
Truth is, I have always done my own thing regardless if it was fashionable or not, and will go against the grain if I believe in it.
Maybe that is how I define myself, undefinable 
If I had to come up with something, I would say, A nice guy that treats others as he would like to be treated.
Great thread, it does make you think a bit.

Too long to go into, but the short version, I let others define my perception of myself long ago. It's not flattering, but it's comfortable (for the most part). Basically, I'm "that strange little guy with the long hair and the really thick glasses, you know? The kinda weird one? But, you ever talk to him? He's really smart."

Have you ever considered moving somewhere else where someone like you would be celebrated and appreciated?
It's not your fault that others in your tiny town don't get you.
There is a difference between walking your own path that a few don't get, and your whole town thinking you are weird.
In the later case I think I would move.
Just my two cents.

I don't know Kenn, I kinda like being "that old guy whose always up to something" in my neighbood. I live close to the University and many of the houses around us have been turned in to rentals for college students. We get along fine, but I know that they wonder about me. I don't fit their idea of a typical 50+ year old. I kinda like that.

Could be Kenn. Could also be my nude break-dancing in the front yard....apparently nobody really wants to see that ...but I've come to know the local law enforcement officers on a first-name basis
Most of the neighbors watched me build a stone wall in my front yard last summer when it was 90+ degrees outside...they liked what I did...just wondered why in the world I'd do it in the heat!
