Isn't person's age a PRIVATE information?
( The only age -related question justified to be asked is : "over 18 yo" or "under 18yo" , for legal purposes only. Otherwise - a person's age is hardly anyone's business . ) Sure, our choice might be depending on our potential partner's age , among other things - like bank account, for example. Still , no one is supposed to reveal his/her finances to strangers, right? So, how's age different?

Gee, it might be because some of us are sincerely looking for a partner and age does matter. It's hard enough getting to know someone over the internet without knowing if they are old enough to be your dad or young enough to be your son. 
And yes...people do lie about age before someone brings that up.
