You're never going to get a liberal to send candy and flowers to George Bush on Valentine's day. But is it possible for nearly any two people to fall in love (I'm talking about opposite sex here).
India, where arranged marriages are common, has one of the lowest divorce rates in the world. I'm not sure this proves anything because divorce is highly discouraged there as well. It may be that there is just a greater incentive to stay married. But it raises some interesting questions, and it's something I have always wondered about.
Given the exposure and the opportunity, can you learn to love virtually any member of the opposite sex? Or is there that "one special person" who was put on the planet especially for you. Or maybe there are a few "special people," and you just need to find any one of them to live in romantic bliss?
Speaking for myself, when I was young, I was positive that there was one and only one girl for me. I was champing at the bit waiting for my chance to go forth into the world to find her, woo her, marry her , have a houseful of kids with her and ride off into a life of eternal unicorns and rainbows.
Somewhere around the fifth or sixth girl that I was sure I was completely in love with, I began to think that maybe there was a flaw in my understanding somewhere. But I was still holding on, willing to believe that I only thought I was in love with these girls, but I didn't really know what real love was yet until .... by my tenth or so "true love," I was convinced I needed to rethink the whole thing.
What if I never meet "the one," what if she lives in Bangladesh, speaks no English or is already mistakenly married to the "wrong one?"
Eventually I came to believe that you can learn to love nearly anyone given an opportunity, enough patience and enough time. It probably makes it a lot easier if you are attracted to them yourself and choose them yourself rather than having someone else choose them, but even then, my experience tells me there is a pretty good chance you could learn to love someone just as much either way.
What do you think?

I believe there is some validity to your statement, but I have always believed you will have two, great, true loves in your life which which will stand out to you the most and you might end up marrying one of them.
I have had the first one (my first love) and I am planning on marrying this one. I believe my situation is kind of a testament to fate and true love. A lot of people don't put stock in it, but it's something I've always believed in.

I dont think you can learn to love "virtually anyone", but you can "virtually love" anyone.

Perhaps better said like this.....you cant love almost anyone, but you can almost love anyone.

Absolutely NOT!! I could never love pedophiles, drug dealers, wife beaters, etc. If circumstances made putting up with their presence (they're family or coworkers), I'd tolerate it, but love the person? Are you kidding?

If we could learn to love anyone, the divorce rate wouldn't be so high.

While I don't think we can fall in love with any person that comes into our live, I don't believe in the concept of only one true love.
I believe there are many we can love truly and deeply if even for a while. I like to think that there are many opportunities to find our "forever".

I have fallen in love with someone I wasn't attracted to when I first met them in any way. They were nice though and eventually I found myself in love with them.

I was just chatting with an old online friend who said she fell in love with a guy she was completely physically unattracted to and wasn't her type at all. Of course the relationship only lasted about a couple of months, but hey... it's the audacity of hope!

What if "the one" for me lived in the 1300s and died during The Black Death?
