Cleveland is now #14 on the list! Woo baby Hoo!!
Cleveland moved up on the list
"CLEVELAND -- Cleveland is one of the best cities in the country for singles, according to a new survey out by Forbes magazine.
Compared with past years, Cleveland is the biggest gainer, moving up 24 spots from No. 38 to No. 14 this year.
The survey used the cost of living alone, culture, job growth, online dating, nightlife and ratio of singles to the entire population in the area.
The biggest factor in the rankings this year was an increase in online dating, the magazine said.
New York City came in first place, followed by Boston, Chicago and Seattle. Jacksonville, Fla., came in last place."
Why is your general area good or bad for living single?

Charlotte is a great city for singles. There's lots to do here, and we haven't been hit as badly as most other larger cities with the recession. I'm surprised to see Cleveland #14, because Ohio is in terrible shape economically.

At least, San Antonio's on the list, even though I don't actually live there!

Vacancy rates are rising, rental rates are falling, foreclosures are at all time highs and construction is at a virtual stand still. Sounds like the recession is in full swing to me.

New York is definitely the most romantic city in the world.
If you are the outgoing type who is interested in meeting people for romantic purposes it is also the best place in the world for you.
But it can also be the loneliest place because if you are not the outgoing type, you will see all the activity going on around you and it will relentlessly call your attention to your isolation.
There is simply no place like New York. It is a one of a kind place.

and a VERY expensive one! Say_Yes, notice I didn't say things were 'good' here. I'd still rather be here than someplace like Detroit any day.

Actually, I like Charlotte. I live here by choice, as I can telecommute, if I so desire. It is a good place to be single. Good weather, nice lakes, close to both the mountains & the beach, plenty of clubs, nice restaurants, etc.
I may move to the Charleston area some day, but I really do like living in Charlotte.

Charlotte is indeed nice. I'd rank it third on my list.

Well Phoenix was tenth last year, I'll bet we dropped like a rock!
It's still a good place for those who have jobs or skills that are in demand (I'd guess that medical would top that list - we're still a major retirement destination, and I have yet to go into a doctor's office that wasn't loaded with promos for plastic surgery etc.).
Plenty of nightlife, and it covers pretty much the whole spectrum of musical and lifestyle tastes - upscale in what we affectionately refer to as Snotsdale, or some really cool down and dirty jazz and blues, or Mexicano of course...same with food.
Probably the biggest thing though is that there are relatively few natives here. Wherever you hail from you're likely to find plenty of people from similar backgrounds if that's your thing, or wildly different if you'd prefer that. My two SO's that I found here were from Boston and Detroit respectively. It's a strange town to someone like me though - it's not at all unusual to not only not know your neighbors' names, but you don't even know what they look like. We tend to hide inside during the day and only venture out after the sun goes down, or before it comes up.
It's a city of vampires, I tell ya.
Edited to add that I finally totally agree with DR on something - NYC is indeed a one of a kind place. It can definitely be awful, but I can't think of another place where you can be walking through Grand Central Station, and a guy suddenly drops to his knees in front of you and kisses your feet, or you can get stuck in a cab in a traffic jam for an hour and have the cabbie turn the meter off and play chess with you...or if you want romantic, get cornered by a really obnoxious guy, and then rescued by a gorgeous total stranger with a basso profundo voice, who walks over and puts his arm around your shoulder and says hi honey, I've been looking all over for you. The nanny called and the baby's running a fever...we really have to leave...'

So Seattle is #4 hmmmmm
I definately agree with the coolness factor. Culture? Well I thought that might be a bit higher on the list.
Online dating????...puuuuuuuuuuleeeeeeeeze spare me. If it is that successful then why am I here on MD.... ok no one better answer that.

There is simply no place like New York. It is a one of a kind place. You're right DR and that's why NYC is #1 on the list.
Philadelphia is #10 on the list, a pretty cool place for singles and I live a short drive outside the city.

Seattles good if you're one of those environmentally friendly folks who likes driving a Smart car and being a tree hugger. They don't take kindly to people who drive Hummers or SUV's I'd love it for the coffee places, but the constant rain would be depressing.

Oklahoma City didn't even make the list. I could have guessed that one.
