I haven't seen a thread that specifically "addresses" (yes, this is serious  ) getting winks from lovely gray MD icons...
This totally cracks me up more than anything about winking.....
Of all that's been discussed about why people wink, the meaning of winking, etc., whatever the meaning is from the winker to "the winkee" lol, why would one wink back to the gray faceless guy or ponytail gal? Ok, perhaps they have an amazing profile and seem irrestistible? 
I realize people may be new and not have pics up yet, or wink to people they have come to know on the forums but, for others, they may not be the age, gender, or whatever else they say they are. We know this happens even if people have pics but ...
This stikes me as sooo funny...I'm like "Ok, step out of the gray and into the light of day and then, wink away!!" 
What say you?

I think there may be a number of reasons someone doesn't have a picture up, and I'm sure there are many reasons I haven't thought of.
I am thankful for those I receive (though certain I receive far fewer than a lovely lady such as the OP does), and I take each one as it comes. I do try to reply to each one, though it's not always immediately, as I wait to get a sense, sometimes, of how sincere it may be.
Perhaps if I got as many as she probably does, I would feel differently. But it's not likely I'll find out.

sorry angel.. usually you have very thoughtful posts..
but this time..this is a no brainer........
it is the same topic as..
no pic..no reply.... 
as one of those faceless people..
If I wink at a (female) person........it means that I am interested in getting to know them a bit better....but that there is something in the profile that stopped me from writing to them...
so....It's an easy way to say...
read my profile..and posts...and if there is anything interesting to you... .....the ball is in your court...
......to write back..
.. 
 you know.. .if the faceless wink bothers anyone that much
they can just ignore..or write back this..
"please post a current picture... thanks.... "

One person's take on it, but to me a wink from a faceless person that I've never interacted with in the forums is going to be ignored...and I think most of us feel that way. The odds are going to be high that it's just another phisher. I wouldn't delete it since then they could wink again...
Pictureless is another thing - I can also see lots of reasons for that, but an email isn't really all that tough.
JMHO as always.

I'm with you, Angel.
I don't mind them winking, but, I think if 2 people want to make a go at a relationship, a nice short email is better...
I would like to see them make winks optional....

a wink is a good icebreaker..
imho the problem is the unknown...
just who is the person behind the mask...??
as I see it.. even people with picture posted can be hiding behind a mask..
be a scammer or even be.... Married
why take a simple thing as a wink to such a serious level...?
btw...no scammer has ever winked at me.... I get the occasional email every now and then... but that is about it...

On a free site ~ I always think the wink is lazy. To me it's like saying ~ ok ~ I'll spend one second on you to see if you're interested. I always just wink back and usually never hear from them again ~ which also makes me think they were just too lazy to write an email.

Heya Gallows  ...I do understand where you're comin' from darlin' yet I'm not questioning why people wink or the meaning of winking, although indeed, I do question (grin at) the idea of winking back at an icon.
....for me, it's not so much about "no pic no response" per se when it comes to winking....to me it's about how humorous it feels to receive a wink from a gray icon, especially when I've had no contact with the person whatsoever (emails, forums, etc).....winks have never bothered me, but they do crack me up when they're from faceless strangers.....there are a lot of people with no pics who regularly post on the forums and accordingly we can get to know them, like anyone with a pic, in the best of ways ....yet there is something humorous about getting a wink from "a gray icon person guy" whom I've never met or seen on the forums or otherwise....
it's kinda akin to walking down the street and as someone is passing you, s/he winks at you...although a stranger, that might feel sweet since you saw their face and felt their nuance.......but in another scenario someone passes you, with a bag on their head that has a wink drawn on it, and says nothing. That would be hysterical! It would have me in stitches anyway!
