Valentines Day is totally over rated..lol, Seriously it has became so commercialised along with every other holiday. I just looked up a site on Saint Valentine and read something I never knew...
St Valentine was a priest in Rome around 269 AD who refused to give up Christianity...During that time this Emperor named Claudius outlawed marriage so that the men would give up on love and join his army. So Valentine would marry couples despite the law, but was beheaded for it on Feb 14....before he died he sent a farewell to the jailers daughter for befriending him...he signed the note; From Your Valentine. I thought that was cool and wanted to share it

There many differant versions as to how Valentines Day got its name...the one I read about he was the first person to send a Valentine to his wife..and there are others..no two stories are ever alike.

You want to meet Grizzly Adams?! Now that is just weird!
In all seriousness, I vaguely remember watching that show back when I was a boy. I don't remember the name of that miner, but I do recall that he had named his burro "Jack." (Or was it a mule? Just what is the difference anyway?) It is kind of sad, but a show like that would never be aired today--not even on a cable network. I remember that I watched it mostly because I loved the view of the mountains. I wonder where it was filmed?

By the way, I agree that holidays are overexploited. It's equally annoying that so many new "holidays" are being created specifically to be exploited: National Cactus Appreciation week, International Secretary's day, etc.

Now that was funny "I don't care who you are"!!!!
Way to go Lucky.
The way the story ended up was the jailers daughter opened up a Hallmark store and wellllllll the rest is history.
Its over now the stuff is 70 % off at Wally World.
I got some candy just in case next year something different happens.
Great story Gimme

All this talk about Valentines and finding out how it began is cool but I do have something personal to share on this thread.
I am contemplating taking my own life.
Not because I didnt get a valentine,I did get two over the phone from my kids, but for this reason......
Maybe Alzheimers is settin in on me at 50, but for the life of me I cannot see where the Grizzly Adams show fits in with valentines day.

I am not surprised that Valentine's day has become so commercial. Anything to make a buck these day's. I think most single people would like to have a boyfriend or girlfriend. Kudo's to Gimme for saying what alot of us won't. I know I would like to have a girlfriend. It's human nature to not want to be alone.
