Can Tell A Lot From A Username?

Ok, I know this is a huge stretch, but can you tell a lot about a person by just their usernames?

Personally, when I look at a woman's user name and they contain any of the following (to name just a few) -- princess, queen, lexus, porsche, lawyer, real estate, diva, high + maintenance, rich, sarcastic, demanding, 2smart, etc. -- I usually have a negative impression right from the start. I then read the profiles and pretty much have it confirmed...lol.

Ladies and gents, do you agree that one can tell a lot from a simple user name, or am I just being delusional?

Sometimes, but I don't think a username makes a person. Generally, I have no idea what to put as my username; I'll struggle, even, to pick the right one. The only time I'm truly thrown off usernames is when they leave nothing to the imagination.

Example:

"BignHornyWith12InchesOfFun"

Aside from the username being a fake, I find that it's distracting and very one-sided.

Mo...I see people label themselves and pretty much matches how others see them as well. Sometimes I will notice a usernames completely different than the profile write up, kinda Dr. Jekel-Mr Hyde syndrome.

My guess is "Motown is a sure life of music tiding"

Oh, you mean like when a guy uses "69", "tongue", "lick", "inches", "wet", "stick" or anything else along those lines that denotes how much he is in love with his own penis and its alleged magnificence in the bedroom? Yes, I have turned down responding to these "gentlemen" because to me it is a sign of immaturity. I'm sure within 10 minutes of meeting, he would ask what color my thong is.

Granted I have been mistaken by one fellow's screen name in particular but his very interesting picture piqued my curiosity so I decided to check out his profile, wherein the screenname meant something totally different than I had assumed. I told him so, we laughed about it, met the next night for dinner, and are in contact to this day.

I don't bother with sexually suggestive screennames writing to me. Why some men think that is cute or sexy or a turn-on, I don't know.

I agree with ebony. Just tonight, I discovered I was mistaken about the meaning of 69, on a particular profile. It represented yin and yang.

I did see another name that was a certain color of wings. I'm hoping it has something to do with a hawk, rather than having a sexual meaning. It was a turn-off. Truth is, if I see a name like that, I don't even look at the profile. I'm not interested.

Someone told me, I should have called myself Sassy_Blonde. I do like it better than the name I chose. It is more ME. Too lazy to change it though.

Nice Topic MO

I think a user name can tell alot. I feel some people use a name just to draw attention to them selve's. I am just one who just like's to tell it like it is. I use my firsr name on everything I do. I find it hard when people write to you and then never give out their name at all. This make's no sense to me at all. I like a name where it can tell me something about the person.I do think an unsual name is linked to an unusual profile. I just tend to be leery of someone who has a name that's way out of the ordinary. That is just me. My name is simple but there is so much more to the person behind name.It is a matter of getting to know me and finding that out.

In some cases you can tell things from a username, but not always reliably.

Looking at the profile helps a little more, but it could still be unreliable as well.

The only reliable thing you can do is talk to the person and then if they are boobs, then stop communicating with them.

Interesting topic.

Since we get to choose our screen names, it DOES say something about us. It reflects our degree of self-esteem, our preoccupation at the time of creation, even our imagination and/or sense of humor.

Is it the end-all/be-all of a person? Of course not. But, personally, I do find they are rather telling.

Yes, but is it actual or "virtual".

Reality or imagination?

These things should be considerations as well.

Like others, I feel that the name can reveal some things about a person but not all. However, I, too, avoid those names that contain any type of sexual reference. I guess I just feel these people are only out for one thing, and the name they choose is sort of an advertisement for that. Hmm...names can be perhaps a way of being something they're not. Interesting topic....I'll be paying more attention to names I think, just because I am the curious sort. Thank Mo for starting this one....

My nicknames actual..even have Tink tattooed in a heart on my arm..a childhood nickname..Nothing wrong with using the real first name though..but everyone has their own preferences and reasons for choosing a name.

Mine comes from two things.

First "Thunder" comes from when I used to play football in high school, before my knee blew out, and I was called Thor.
Thor=Thunder

Second, "scribe" because I'm a writer and because a professor made it a nickname for me.

Thus, "Thunderscribe"

I don't like using an alias, but I also know not to use actual information on an open website such as this one.
That could be a little risky from a computer security POV.

I think it's interesting to see how others perceive themselves and often their names do fit their forum personalities. Other times its just plain funny when "Mr or Mrs nice guy" turns into a raging lunatic with their posts. I also tend to avoid names implying sexual innuendo. Comes across as a little immature. Then there are those that you know just had to settle for what was left in choices, I've done that on different gaming sites.

Hmmm... I guess my s/n pretty much says it all.....LOL..

However my alias on the web is KC and most people think it means Kansas City...It does NOT.

I know that when I run into people I dont know , if their s/n contain any references to sexualty I turn and walk..... So I think it does say something.

ebonyluvsivory.

Obviously, I was speaking from a male point of view looking at woman’s profiles, but men do the crude, sexual he-man username route, which is equally stupid and disgusting.

Lol…Yep Angel!…I’m 100% Motown Music!...oh, and about 100,000 other types!

Good points, Jeff and Thunder. Some people just like to be outrageous and think up the most shocking thing in order to be noticed, but that gives a ton of clues about their personality, too, and not always flattering.

Also, if the profile does intrigue, the need to explore further is of course essential, no matter the username.

Great observations, peeps!!
