I guess things have changed and I need to get up to speed on things after not dating for 3 yrs and then trying it out the past few months which I now regret! LOL
If you tell someone you love them does it mean I love you when I'm with you but I'm still out there looking and playing the field as long as I don't verbally tell you we are exclusive?
or
does it mean it's just you and me babe.
I'm way out of the loop apparently, I guess I'm old school and was under the assumption the words I love you implied exclusiveness or commitment to just that one person if you will to which I have been told I am wrong. So give it to me straight Guys so I can go back out there with my eyes wide open next time...if there is a next time

well i am not a guy...but i will butt in and give my two cents worth..lol
i guess i come from the old school also...to say i love you means you are ready for commiment...that person has touched you in a way no one else has..
of course for dating..you can always use the words, respect..admire...horny...rofl

It means the same as it always have through the ages! It hasn’t change. Just because some of the smooth talkers on here or elsewhere use it to get what they want and for them it works, don’t mean the rest of us men don’t know what love is.
Myself I don’t use the term loosely. I only say it when it is really felt by me and companion. It has to much meaning to just throw out there and if used to early or a lot it will loose some of its meaning to me.

To me.. the words "I love you" are not thrown around.....I take them seriously, in a romantic sense I don't use them until I feel them. I think those words mean the following; "I want to be with you and only you exclusively... forever."
There are too many people who throw those words around, and unfortunately they lose currency, and meaning..

I don't mean abuse my trust, treat me like dirt, cheat on me with my friends...
and yet several women have seen it that way...

I would NEVER say those words without the feelings to back them up. If someone is saying that to you as a motive to get you in bed and you haven't discuss the status of your relationship; maybe you should use it as a clue to do so. Relationships are all about communication... If I want to know how you feel I will ask. If you want to know... just ask. I believe until you have talked about being monagamous, it is a mistake to make any assumptions.
In any case.... Baby, if you ever read this... God I love you!

Oh us lady types believe ya its just men say it so frequently and then first sign of any complications they run.......
Its a sad time these days with so many people running all over and checking greener pastures...No commitments.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I said "I love you" to anyone apart from my daughter. I used to say "yes" to my ex-wife when she asked me, but that was just to get her off my back, and she soon knew that I didn't... I think perhaps I told her that after a while.
But, if I ever say that to another woman, it will mean that I want to spend the rest of my life with her.

You might find it interesting thta some of us women are our own sugga mommas.
My sons dad....I gave him the house I had just built on 5 acres, and left with what I brought into the marriage. Not all women are gold diggers...Im finding there are more men who want a free ride.

I guess JMW, the question could be asked if you are talking about the guy who says it after the third date or the one who finally says it after seeing you for a year? Huge difference between the two. Then there's the guy who says it all the time about everything and the one who says it because he thinks that's what you want to hear and that it will get him what he wants. Not that women ever do any of this either, especially at times of high emotions for them.

I play the bitter card way too often, but these days, I tell my dog I love her, my family members... and my friends...
I don't know where or when my trust levels will be, and until I meet someone, I don't know if I will say that to anyone......

Could it be that the discussion is centering around two different concepts---the concept of love and the concept of commitment? I love my son; I love my family; I love my work; I love ice cream; I love a beer on a summer day; I love my friends...etc... Is it true, that two people in a relationship can "love" one another, but either one or both is/are not ready to "commit" to one another? Perhaps, what needs to get asked by someone who is told, "I love you" is: "Define that for me, please." Love in a relationship is truly important, but clear communication is essential.
And Painter...good for you. Love is meant to bring other types of riches. "Who being loved, is poor?" (Oscar Wilde).

MY personal concept is thus...
IF I tell a woman I love her, it means my heart has decided that she is the only woman I want in my life, I believe her to be the woman I have searched for my entire life. I have been mistaken in the past, but do not plan to be again.

I don't ever throw around the "I love you's". If I feel in my heart that this is something special, and I do start falling in love, I will express it. I was raised you never say you love someone unless you actually mean it..
