Which city do you think is better? Do you think that it is true that the rich live in Bettendorf and the poor live in Davenport?

I wouldnt say that. Bettendorf is less diversified as far as ethnic backgrounds. I believe the school system is much better in Bettendorf. Bettendorf is a little more pricey than Davenport, but there is really no crime to speak of here. I was born and raised in Bettendorf, so know a lot about the area.

Then you will agree with my observation that the rich live in Bettendorf, the poor live in Davenport, the crazy live in Rock Island, the foolish live in East Moline, the losers live in Milan and everybody else lives in Moline?

RQ, methinks you may have just managed to make yourself disliked by almost everybody inside the 80/280 loop...'cept Bettendorf...you better just keep rolling 'til you get to Cedar Rapids...

Cedar Rapids is even worse than Davenport. With the possible exception of Des Moines the entire state of Iowa is a cultural wasteland where the plants are much more intelligent than the people. It must be all the pesticides that have been poured into the soil.
It could be worse, though. At least Iowa is not Illinois.

Oh Lord, I'd be willing to hazard a guess that Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah won't be to your liking, either...well, I-80 will take you right into the middle of San Francisco!
Get gas in Wyoming; I think it's cheapest there...

I can see that you are too young to understand the nature of the problem, so I will explain it. It matters because it ultimately affects the future of the community. Rich people spend money to keep poor people away. If that is not possible then the rich people move away. (You can do a Google search on the "white flight" that occurred during the 1960's and 1970's.) This diminishes the tax base and the city revenues which forces the city to cut services. This affects poor people more than it affects the rich because poor people can't afford to pay as much as the rich can. Crime rates rise and that discourages prospective employers. In other words, it is a downward spiral that can destroy a city--think of Detroit as one example--if it is allowed to continue. When I say you are too young to understand the problem, I mean exactly that: You are too young to recall the economic agony that occurred when Case, International Harvester and other agricultural manufacturers moved from the Quad Cities to Mexico and then to China in the early 1980's. The economy has diversified since then, but the Quad Cities has never really recovered from the loss of those jobs.

So, if you feel that way..what keeps you in Iowa???? I live across the river in Illinois, but not by choice My elderly parents both live in Illinois and are in poor health and need all the help that they can get. Unfortunately, they are too stubborn to move to another state. They also instilled a sense of duty in me, so my options are rather limited at the moment.

Cedar Rapids is even worse than Davenport. RQ, sweetie... how often do you have something nice to say?
CR is multi-ethnical, varied income levels, good schools. You'll get that anywhere. (at least ya dissed your own state, too!)

So, if you could be anywhere else, where would it be? Somewhere west of the Mississippi.
Anywhere on the West Coast is a good place to start. The Southwest is also magnificent. It may sound silly, but I really do believe that geography influences people. People who live within view of such awe-inspiring features as the Rocky Mountains or the Grand Canyon or the rugged beauty of the desert do tend to be more creative and friendly than those who live in, say, the concrete canyons of Chicago or New York or the dull blandness of Kansas. I would love to live in a state where the wild beauty has not been as subverted and/or even destroyed as much as it has in Illinois.

I readily acknowledge that Iowa and Illinois could be worse. Iowa could be Kansas! I really feel sorry for people who live in Kansas. I have passed though that state a couple of times and it was a major challenge just to stay awake in the car. There is nothing but fields of wheat and beans for miles and miles and miles in every direction! Kansas must be the most boring place in America if not on the entire planet.

I grew up 30 minutes from Glacier National Park in Montana...I have lived in Portland, Oregon (by far the most beautiful place on earth!!!) and now I live in Iowa. I don't think you will find a place anywhere anymore where the wildness of the beauty of the land hasn't been affected by man "paving paradise and putting up parking lots!" Each place has it's own claim to fame...it's own wildness, it's own beauty....it is man's attitude and preference that dictate whether or not it is a viable place to live. Not everyone sees things the same way..what a boring world we would live in if that were true!!!
