Backward is relative to one's own impression of forward, as well as the matter being judged, isn't it?
I would wager there are more illiterate people in Los Angeles, than in the entire state of Kentucky, for example. I would wager heavily there are more murders in New York City, in a single weekend, than there are in all the combined counties east of and including Fayette County, in a year.
Fact of the matter, I've been pretty much everywhere in that one Johnny Cash song with the exception of Fargo and the Islands. No matter where you go, you'll find people you like and people you don't. Thats just how things work.

All states have those who are illiterate in them. Kentucky is not the only one. But I will say that they are one of the friendliest states. Having lived and been to a lot of places I can boast of this. But I have also found that my expectations of a place will usually not disappointment me because if I found the people on my street unfriendly, I will probably find them unfriendly on my new street. The problem is my view of them. And the problem is probably not them at all, but me.
