I've been doing it off and on since 1999 and have had two long-term relationships and several dates that ended quite well -- not to mention some lasting friendships -- come out of it all. I think the problem here is that most people don't know how to properly disclose about themselves or only have a vague idea of themselves at all. And frankly, if you don't know yourself then you don't know your motivations -- and if you don't know your motivations then you cannot possibly know what you're looking for. But if you know how to look for the right things you can have a ton of fun with it all and often come out with a better match to your actual personality. Especially when you can end up having some more cerebral exchanges before even venturing into the nervous and often awkward "date" end of things. I find that it's far simpler and less loaded to exchange interests, tastes, goals, and personality quirks through typing messages than when one is put on the spot to produce such information without any primer. Then, when you actually meet the person, you can take it for granted that you click and get on with getting along. That's just my experience though. -O
