Yes, you have to be careful because if you are really "just" flirting and the other person likes you , you then become a "tease"...

...I've already flirted with someone online and they ended up liking me, mind you I kinda liked them too, but I'm not single anymore and I can't wait for someone online forever,lol....

I think I may have slipped a few virtual tongues in the past few weeks, but the real deal only goes to Jim. He's cool with it. And the guys I tease...they know darn well that it's all in fun. 
BUT....my naughtyness stays int he forums, nothing on the sly or in the mail box. It's all up front where you can see it!

Agreed, Lor, cause if you are doing that, what is the relationship all about anyway?
As to GH's question, when you say cares about someone, just what exactly does that mean? You go to movies together? Catch a meal once in a while? Have occasional friends with fringe benefits sex? If the woman is emotionally committed to the guy, then most of the time she won't flirt with anyone else. There are exceptions to that, some ladies can't help themselves, and some are just so outgoing that what they perceive as being friendly is considered flirting by the person. I don't know too many guys (either actually good looking or just think they are) who do not flirt. In a relationship, not in a relationship, out alone or with their special lady. It is a man's nature. It's not right, or fair to the lady, and any guy who did that to me, I would be walking away from, but I do understand them.
