The Art of the Blow Off . . .

Most of us have used them and/or had them delivered to us as we explore the dating jungle. They can range from the "deadly silence" (no response to emails, phone number changed . . .moved in the middle of the night?) to a nice long message/conversation intended to "let you down easy" and always ending with, "We can be/lets still be friends?"

I was recently the recipient (yup, the dumpee) of one that was unique in my experience. Just after the holidays I began seeing a great deal of a woman that lives in a town just north of my home in Boulder, Colorado. For those of you unfamiliar with the locale, the town I live in is commonly referred to as "The People's Republic of Boulder" . . .due to its reputation for being the local gravitational center of all things liberal, new age and hipsterish. But I digress . . .

The woman and I spent the better part of a month doing the usual "dating" and "getting to know you" activities and we were making progress toward what we both thought we were looking for . . .a committed, monogamous long term thing ("thing" because I hate the overused aspects of the word "relationship")

It was a Friday morning at the end of January . . .my prospective new partner in life had been out the previous night on a "girls night out" . . .and experience had already taught me that I was in for some "review by committee" (see other posts) interrogation. I booted up my computer and found an email from the lady waiting for me, usually a welcome way to start my day. This one began ominously, "I have been doing some thinking . . . '

Without going into all the preliminary and preparatory verbiage, the blow off line was . . .(insert drum roll here) . . ."You are distracting me from my spiritual path."

Although I have never been much or organized religions, and have always figured I had more than enough to keep me busy in the present life without worrying about an after life, I have always seen myself as a "golden rule" kind of person . . .with actions bounded by honesty, integrity, honor and compassion. This blow off left me wondering if somehow I was being seen as a Charles Manson incarnation . . .until I realized that it was a fitting, proper and strangely appropriate "People's Republic" exit line . . .

What are your favorites . . .either as a dumpee or dumper?

Perhaps the one that stung the most was being told, after a decidedly pleasant few months of dating and considering moving towards a future together, thank you for helping him heal to the point he was now engaged to his previous girlfriend.

Note to self: Next time blame the dog!

On second thought, it won't fly . . . or, in a more appropriate manner, "that dog won't hunt." Charly likes everyone, especially women.

Get a less lovable dog?

I have had so many that I have lost track . I think the worst was when I was engaged last year. She said she needed time to see what she wanted. she was married 3 month's later. I found out with an e-mail. thats was hard . I am stronger and wiser for it.

Well one of the ones he used on me recently, after a 2 1/2 year relationship, there is to much furniture in the house...I had moved my stuff in, to many clothes in the closet (small closet) and the list goes on.

Any of course let's be friends...............that one hurts
