What ever happened to power deregulation?
Is Con Ed still the only power company available in NYC?
I was looking forward to cheaper and/or more environment friendly energy.

Hey Everrett, I thought it was more suitable. Now that I'm living in Azerbaijan these days, a new name just seemed like a good idea. :-)
Emp, can you post the alternatives? I did a Google search but couldn't find the names of any alternative NYC power companies.

According to an AARP alert, the new companies are not held to the same consumer protection standards as conEd, which given their record is not exactly comforting!

Residential ESCOs
Energy Service Companies Serving Residential and Small Commercial Customers
The ESCOs listed below have met the eligibility requirements of the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) and are actively marketing in New York City and/or Westchester County. These ESCOs have indicated they will supply electricity and gas to residential and small commerical (SC2) customers. They may decide to change their services without notifying us to update this page. Click on the underlined ESCOs to visit their Web pages for additional information.
While we encourage you to shop around and explore alternative suppliers through PowerYourWay, Con Edison does not send salespeople to your door or have them call your home or business. We want to remind you that ESCOs do not represent Con Edison. Representatives from ESCOs authorized by the New York Public Service Commission may visit or call your home or business to discuss their services with you. You should never show them your Con Edison bill or reveal your account number unless you are ready to make a switch to an ESCO. Switching to a different supplier is your choice. You are not required to choose an ESCO and there are no deadlines for making a move to an ESCO. So shop wisely and make the energy choice that makes sense for you. you'll have to define "environment friendly"
what little ConEd is still producing is largely related to steam-- which provides power, heat, and cooling to much of Manhattan in a closed loop system-- about as clean a source there is--and most of NY power is hydro, also among the cleanest sources there are--the few coal fired plants in NY (one around Newburgh, the rest are in Western NY) are all undergoing heavy duty upgrades which will meet the California emission standards, and our couple of nuke plants, which are absolutely the cleanest way of boiling water ( for the rest of you following the discussion, most power generation is done by various methods of boiling water-- 90% or so of power generation is built around high pressure steam generation-- so the fuels and methods used in these methods have a direct impact on air emissions-- nuke has zero emissions-- and even at Three Mile Island, the cooling containers worked, containing the spill-- we don't build like the russians, nor do we operate our reactors drunk-- so chernobyl has no relevancy)
The spawning grounds around the powerplants upstate are all doing VERY well, so waterborne emissions don't seem to be a current issue (hell, while there is a worldwide decline in amphibian populations, the one place where breeding is continuing at normal rates is around US power plants--DEP has several fascinating studies on their website)-- so just what are you looking for in more friendly to environment?
None of the ESCOs are directly involved in production (except, as noted some small generation that ConEd kept through contractual obligation) so all you're doing is buying in to a repacking service-- which has no environmental impact-- except for the amount of junk mail they send you, trying to get you to sign up.
null statement, zero entropy!
