The concept of hunting I understand. I realize men and some women thrive off of the excitement sitting in a tree silently for hours can bring. I know how much you like getting up at 4 am meeting your buddies and heading into the woods. I get that I really do.

I live in the Sandhills Gameland, all around me is nothing but woods and sand. Now often as I am driving to town I see the trucks parked long side the road and sometimes even a few hunters standing around their trucks,{ who could miss them with their neon orange hats}.

Back a few months ago I decided to experience a trip into the woods; I did a lot of reading {the handbook you are given when you get your license}, it was very informative I learned when and where you could hunt and what {ladies the guys cant hunt anywhere in NC on Sundays}. On my trip into the woods it was basically a looking for deer track adventure. I had a great time walking with two male friends who were shocked I could keep up with them as well as catch on so fast. We found what we were looking for and even I couldn’t wait for them to head in to the woods the following day. Unfortunately I can’t report that they got the big one or anything for that matter.

So I understand the concept and the excitement it all can bring, what I haven’t understood though is what is the deal with hunting with dogs? As I drove on the dirt road into town today I seen all these guys dressed fully in hunting gear, guns in hand standing on the edge of the woods. What gives with that? How can you consider that any fun when you’re standing at the edge of the woods alone I might add, waiting just waiting for what?

I work with a couple of guys that hunt.. every year they save their vacation time for opening day.. one guy came home with 3 big ones.. the other fella.. nada..
Rick always has one dressed out and cooked for everyone in the plant for our Christmas meal.. barbequed deer meat.. yummy...

my ex father in law was a hunter also.. but a few years ago, after squatting in a tree for hours he stood up, passed out and fell out of that dang tree.. needless to say. he doesn't hunt anymore.

Okay, I don't hunt, but I grew up in eastern NC and a lot the guys I knew then hunted and all of them used dogs. Some people hunt for fun, but these guys hunted for meat. They liked venison and by using dogs that gave them the best chance to get a deer, with the least amount of time/effort involved. Is it sporting, or fun? No, not to me, but to them it was.

Update!

I think I finally have it....the dogs are basically used to bring the deer out of the areas where the hunters cant get into. How simple was that!

Thanks for all the comments.

My hunter friend explained his hunting trip today to me and I think I finally got it. He also explained that NC is trying to stop the hunting with dogs, he explained to me if they did that then there would be deers dying in areas of the woods that werent hunted from old age or what have ya.

Anyone have any thoughts on that? Did I finally get it or am I still lost out in the woods?

Here in western north carolina it is illegal to hunt deer with dogs. We coon hunt with dogs at night, and people use them to bear hunt, but in this area coon hunting is the only way dogs are used.
