Oh, you mean on that old thread from last year??? I thought it would be good to start a thread for this year, then people don't have to go through pages of last year stuff to get to the current conversation.
I've been talking to some people on Plenty of Fish, we've been discussing places for a spring wildflower hunt. There are so many beautiful areas in Oregon...they have some good ideas, check it out.

Hi --
Yeah, on the old forum I suggested Valley of the Rogue Park, near Gold Hill, as a potential picnic spot. Lovinheart liked the idea. It's easy to find, with river frontage, lots of space ....
But I'd be in favor of a wildflower walk too -- maybe earlier in the year than a picnic would have to be. Anybody been to the top of the Table Rocks, at the north end of the Rogue Valley? Wonderful spring wildflowers, with a whole new set of colors every week or two! Great views of the valley, too, and more dependably sunny than locations further north ....

Sally, I'm kind of thinking that it's on the other side of the state from you... How far would you be willing to travel??? There seems to be a lot of interest in the Southern end of the state, even on Plenty of Fish...haven't been hearing much of anything from the North and Central parts of the state.

Hi, Sally --
Are you familiar with Table Rock Road, which leads north out of Medford? When you get out near Sam's Valley, after you cross the river, that's where the Table Rocks are. I'm talkin' north, as in "up" on the map, not "up" the freeway, which actually goes more west than north out of Medford!
If you're coming from the northern parts of the state, you'd take I-5 south past Grants Pass, and either turn off at Gold Hill and take Highway 234 (a nice scenic route) or go on into Central Point and then east on Pine Street to a left onto Vilas Road, then another left onto Table Rock Road.
The Table Rocks are two high mesas -- flat-topped mountains about 800 feet higher than the surrounding area, which are the remains, after erosion, of the volcanic plane that once covered the area. The Rogue River and its local tributaries have been carving away the lava rock for thousands of years, creating the Rogue Valley -- it's a fascinating bit of local geology! It's a surprising experience to hike for an hour to get to the top of one or the other of these chunks of rock, to discover the flatness of the top! The views from there are spectacular, and the rich volcanic soils support an amazing array of wildflowers in springtime!

Thanks, Jim....I've not spent much time in southern OR. Only some training I supplied to a brokerage in Medford on a couple of occasions, but I flew. Did get over to Jacksonville, however---loved it! There's a Baker City kinship there---the Paint Your Wagon story supposedly happened in J-ville; the movie was filmed in Baker County and its showing against a downtown building wall is an annual event.
The Table Rocks sound amazing, and I'd love to wander a bit and snap photos in that area. I'll watch this thread and see if the timing works. I do have a little van that allows for trips of over a day. I do thank you for your 'welcoming' comment :-)

Sally! Jacksonville has had 3 films done there I believe. First was Canyon Passage with Clark Bable and Hoagy Charmichael. then "Last of the Wild Horses" with Jimmy Ellison ( one of Hoppy's old side kicks) also Reed hadley and Jane Frazee. then " The Great Northfield Minnesotta Raid" with Robert DuVal and Cliff Robertson. There may have been a couple others. Gunsmoke had several episodes on the Rogue River. Jack Elam ( old crooked eye) was in them. he liked it so well that he came back here to live. He passed away a couple years ago.
I live 3 miles North of Upper Table Rock. Great scenery..
Just a bit of info for you about Southern Oregon , the banana belt!

I had no idea there was a Richland Oregon Sally. I know there is a Richland Washington in the Tri Cities area. Kennewick, Pasco and Richland. Lots of sun there, but the wind blows like crazy. I taught there in Kennewick for 3 years in the 60's. I looked on the map/atlas and can't locate Richland Oregon. You are in Portland now, right?

Richland, OR, is between Baker City and Halfway (closer to Halfway). It's very close to the Snake River and gets the same kind of water 'effect' as does Fruitland, ID. Strange, but true. It's a cute little town, small but sweet. Much of the Baker Farmers' Market produce and fruit is grown in and around Richland. (and the diner serves 'real' homemade milkshakes!) There are so many interesting places in this state---I need to get a'wandering :-)
