I think this time of year is depressing. The holidays have passed, but where I am (Iowa) we still have snow & cold weather. People don't go out as much & do stuff & that makes them depressed.
Anyone ever hear of light therapy? These are special lights that are supposed to be mood-improving.

I suffer through periods of depression and panic attacks. Although I don't know what your situation is, I somewhat understand what you are going through. Prayer really does help if you are religious. Friends and family are also a big help and if it gets really bad, you can always see a doctor. I was on medication for depression and panic a few years ago and it really did help. I hope you feel better soon.

I have for most of my life-it's genetic-and I take Effexor for it...if you have anything you want to talk about-and this goes for ANYONE suffering from depression-feel free to email me, if you need someone to talk to about it.

I think everyone suffers from depression of one type or another from time to time. You just cant let it get to you, I know thats easier said then done but there is always a way to let it out you just have to find the one that works for you .

I have heard of the light therapy and tried it after my own fashion. I bought natural light light bulbs - ones that are supposed to mimic sunlight - and believe it or not they really do work. I have used then every winter for the past three years and they make a world of difference in my moods. I don't use them during the spring, summer or fall because I don't need them then but for the winter they are great. You might try that Chris - I buy mine online. Good Luck and keep your chin up!!

If you have (or think that you may have) true, clinical depression, then my advice is for you to seek professional help. Clinical depresssion results from a chemical imbalance that can be corrected in most cases, with inexpensive medications.
I have ADD, which untreated, has a side effect of depression. My original diagnosis, was that I was bi-polar (boy was he an idiot!) and I too was given Effexor. While that is a wonder drug for a lot of people, for me it was not a good thing. Now, with just a little Ritalin, I am much better and depression is no longer an issue.

I also have ADD, and I take Ritalin, as well. I'd like to take something other than the Effexor, but it's a pain the ass to get off of-and since there's no "special someone" in my life right now, the main problem with Effexor -the sexual side effects- aren't an issue at this time. The "bi-polar" diagnosis is like the catch-all, especially for psychs that are too f**king lazy or arrogant to actually give a damn about what they are doing...based on my own (recent) experience, I wouldn't EVER accept a "Bi-polar" diagnosis unless at least THREE separate Doctors concurred...and the fact that your doc gave you Effexor for it proves he's a dipstick-Effexor has always been for depression only!

Hopefully with the weather improving and the days getting longer you will start feeling better. If that doesn't help, call your family doc and let him know how you feel. Are you taking an antidepressant now?

So I was watching Fox news and they were talking about inversion therapy for depression. Supposidly you hang upside down. The blood rushes to your head and produces more oxygen which in turn makes you feel better.

Clouds that does work for some people. I think it's fun to hang upside down Remember how you used to do it when you were a kid? Kids hang from monkey bars and on swingsets and trees. It does elate your mood.

Heres one that actually works. Put a lamp with a 75 watt bulb next to your bed. Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier then you actually have to get up. When the alarm goes off in the morning turn on the lamp, and resist the need to hide under the blankets. Let the light shine in your face. This really does work.
As for chronic depression, I have it. Really bad!!!! I have lost jobs because of it, and at one point actually spent most of 2 years in bed. It took alot of work, but I don't take drugs for it, they made the ocd and panic worse. Exercise makes it better, walking, yard work, anything outside. Tanning beds also help, I think it is the heat and light that helps. It takes alot of dedication, but behavioral modification does work.
For those of you that don't know, chronic depression hits without warning, and some say it is caused by a chemical imbalance, sometimes I wonder. It actually can run your life, turning into a fear or phobia of doing things that you actually like to do because you fear triggering an episode. Chronic depression is very different from normal depression, and not to be mistaken for seasonal depression. Seasonal usually hits around Thanksgiving and Christmas, all associated with the stress of the holidays. Where chronic depression can hit for no good reason, and last for weeks or longer.
I could go on about this for hours

Speaking of "Light Based" Depression. Generally it's referred to as SAD or 'Seasonal Affective Disorder', which is usually very prevalent this time of year, just before Spring. The main solution is sunlight or getting a lot of light in various forms. Some do create special lighting fixtures. Exercise usually helps too.
While it's not diagnosed this way, my own theory is that SAD affects literally everybody, only varying by the degree of impact it may have in one's life. They don't really know a lot about it. Dreary weather and cloudy days affect just about everyone in similar ways though. Some not quite as much as others.

Chris, if you need to talk or whatever just shout out. I suffer from very bad depression and I know that sometimes it is just helpful to talk, even if you don't know where it is coming from. I get really rough bouts even when the sun is shining. So hang in there bud, and just speak up if you need some help.
