Shinolla shoe polish ... long hours sitting on the steps spit shining jump boots back when I was in an airborne unit. Learning how to build up the shoe polish, then melt it down with shoe dye, then another coat, several times over. Then getting that little cotton ball and just start swirling it around and around. Usually took about 3 hours to get it done the first time, then just keep it up. One special pair used for parades & formations, then safely tucked away in the closet for those special occasions. I remember shining my fathers shoes before the undertaker put them on him for his funeral. Nobody but the undertaker and I knew he had them on or that I had shinned them ... but I think Pop's knew ....

That's so sweet. My mom needs alot of care right now. I'm afraid I'm losing her. She tore both her rotator cuffs and needs surgery to file down the bone so it won't rub because they can't sew them back. The Dr. said at her age it would be like sewing a piece of cheese. She's in the hospital now because she may have had a heart attack this morning. I've had a bad day......sigh

AW - It's tough watching a parent decline, but be glad for and value every moment you still have with them. I lost my mother when I was in the jungles of El Salvador and never got to say goodbye, my father declined from a painful bout with bone cancer so he didn't have many lucent days. I'm sure you've heard that it's all about the circle of life and if you have a moment, pick up the book "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pauch ... I think he's captured what all parents want from and of their children. I am currently watching my sisters husband decline rather rapidly from cancer so I spent all of last week with them. I marvel at how close their marriage has grown over the years and while I know his passing will be very tough on my sister, I also know she loves him enough to want him to slip away painlessly and knowning he's surrounded by love. The big "L" is what makes the world go round and there can never be too much of that ...

Aw I truly feel for you, I am watching my mom go down hill quickly, and there is nothing anyone can do but wait, she lives with my sister and she has bad knees, a really messed up hip and 3 heart attacks in the last 7 years or so.
If I may add apositive spin to this thread, the other day I was asked to go the the Elizabethton Shelter to see if I knew 3 pits that were picked up on my road. I didn't know them, and the shelter was at full capacity. There were 3 dogs that really caught my eye, I knew that a rescue in CT might take them, they were sort of small and Corgi type dogs, maybe just maybe. Well tonight I got a huge maybe. My 48 hour hold on those dogs might turn into a permanent "life" sentence. Everyone cross your fingers, we want them to live. They will move in with us for about a month, I will evaluate them so the foster will have no surprises, and they will be neutered here, then move on to their new lives. I need alot of fingers crossed.

It reminds me of a meadow full of flowers and rainbows; lollipops and chocolate covered grasshoopers.
Shoe Polish reminds me of blissfull day at the park.
