Hey, we Hillbillys actually have a vote too ya know!

Or, we once did anyway. Anymore it may seem a little hard to tell.

And we have our very own Representatives in Congress too. That's the folks that go to D.C. and look out for us. You know, the ones we elected. Not only that, but we have a State Government looking out for us too. We really do!

So it makes a lot of sense that we may have issues we'd like to discuss related either to the National Scene, the World Scene, or even just about lil ole semi-rectangular Tennessee. Issues of particular interest to Suth'n Hill-Folks.

Well, now you've got an avenue by which to make your concerns known, and kick them around.. And here 'tis! Politics for Tennesseans!

Just for the record, I'm an Independent/Centrist. So I don't lean either way by default. I go for the merits of the candidate or the issue at hand. That way you're not locked into any predetermined mindset.

Now I know this thread is long overdue, but don't everybody go posting at once, or it's likely to get confusing.. Especially for us Rednecks!

Increasing Taxes

What do you think of the increased taxation in Tennessee? Necessary? Understandable? Or Excessive and Unreasonable?

One of the more notable areas was for smokers. Predominantly middle and lower class Americans. And whether one hates smoking or not, smokers now pay approximately $8.00 - $9.00 more per carton on average than they did a month ago. That's about a 35% increase. One rather outspoken store clerk asserted that his best friend was going back to smoking crack, just to save money.

One question: If we really must dramatically increase taxes, and if the State surplus of past years has simply vanished somehow, why not booze? Booze actually kills people according to MADD. But that wasn't even considered, as far as I know.

Secondly, promises were made prior to the national election, that those rare Middle Class Americans actually making under $250,000 per year, would experience No New Tax Increases, period!

And how about those statewide Tea Parties yesterday, April 15th? In pretty much every Tennessee city? (as well as just about everywhere else in the country). Do you think anyone we put into government office, to fix things for us, is actually listening?

Centrist...
Ok when did the word start to be used and where was I that I only just saw it used for the first time last week. ??

No, no-one listens. They didn't listen when a large amount of citizens said no to the stimulus plans. They don't listen when we say we are worried about the increased price on ammo. They don't listen to any one unless you have money to back up your concern.

Cigarettes went up $7 a carton in March then April 1st, they went up $6 more. The first was from the cigarette companies, the second one was taxes. I agree, booze should be taxed before cigs. Besides, don't more people drink than smoke? I smoked my last one April 10th. I can't afford them anymore. They were too expensive before the increase.

Politicians...this nation is ours....not yours. You are the stewards of it's future, and you have failed miserably!

Centrists will get no coverage, or credibility, from the mainstream press as long as it remains "far left" in it's ideology. Centrist viewpoints are suppressed by our current two party system, neither of which has our interests, wellbeing, or future at heart.

Ain't it just a mess!?!?!?

Spyder that just means we look at both sides and try to pull the best from the lot. It doesn't really mean we necessarily support unlikely candidates, such as Nadar for instance. Just that we are open to whomever is better qualified, regardless of partisan affiliation. Most of such folks are registered as Independents. And that movement is growing like a weed. (to the dismay of both major parties). But I think it's overdue.

Kinda seems like some of those things may be gone for good though Curious. Unless we define a way to act, and soon. It's a pretty dismal state of affairs right now.

I was real happy about the Tea Party Demonstrations recently though. And there are more to come. It demonstrated that we "the people" are not quite as passive as I was afraid we had become.

Has anybody noticed how nervous Nancy Pelosi is these days?

I've never heard her stammer and stutter and hem and haw quite as much as she has been lately.

If they'd only be truthful in the beginning, these kinds of problems wouldn't come up to bite them in the keester later. It seems pretty simple to me..
