There is a beautiful Japanese garden in Herman Park. It is a pleasant and free experience to wander through the gardens, meditate, admire the flowers and read about our sister city in Japan. I have spent time there letting go of life's sorrows -- I took time to cry -- and left somehow comforted.
It is worth a visit.

Last week, I went for the first time to the Museum of Creative Crafts. It is a fun place with contemporary pieces and lots of classes. They maintain five Artists in Residence who are there a minimum of 24 hours a week for three months to a year. The first Saturday of the month they have a free craft day for kids. (I think it is free. There may be a materials fee.) I plan on taking children of friends on the next opportunity.

Opera in the Heights. Much less expensive than Houston Grand Opera, a small theater in a revamped church building, not a bad seat in the house, and really excellent musicians. I saw Rigoletto there last night and it was fantastic, comparable to the HGO production I saw about six years ago.
http://www.operaintheheights.org/ for more information and upcoming performances.

I took kids yesterday to the Contemporary Crafts Museum to learn how to make felt. While we were there, we all looked at all the crafty art on the walls and spoke with two artists in residence -- a metal worker and a clay artist. It was so fun to see things through the eyes of children.
The Childrens Museum is now on my things to do list now. I read on a profile on here that children's museums were a great place for a date. I may have to try that...
Radio Music Theater continues to be a fun place to laugh -- but not for too much longer... They are redoing all their old shows and threaten that when they have gone throgh the last of them...that's the last. I saw A Bad Night's Sleep there last night.
