Self defence!

So, how many ladies in here are well versed in self-defence? I don't mean, "I took karate classes a few times", but actual self defence classes?

It's an odd question I know, but I was an assistant instructor for several years in martial arts & if there is enough interest, I'd like to start a basic course for those in Fort Worth.

I would consider attending. Other than being watchful of my surroundings I don't know a thing about self-defense. I know being petite puts me at a disadvantage against the opposite sex. Thank God I haven't been in a situation to need this type of training, but we all know what this world is coming to, lol.

lol also if you can get hold of his nuts.. You are in power.. Smile I read something about this one time that a very old lady did this and she somehow also called 911.. yeah I bet that guy was the bell of the ball in prison..

all kidding aside self defence is a good thing to learn.. But with most of us with date type rape stuff happens so fast it is like we are deer caught in the headlights and we forget everything we ever learned...

You know,...thats funny....in a dumb-@ssed kind of way. Pistols are great if you have one in your hand at all times, but if not, you will not have the time to draw it before you are knocked out or worse.

It was meant to be funny ............ I am a very small woman and I do know how to defend myself with, or without a gun. I think all women should know how. I made sure my daughter does. I was not trying to make light of the self defence thing just having a bit of fun.

To bad you aren't closer. I would love a refresher. I have taken classes & being a massage therapist & taking some martial arts I have learned a few "special" moves. However it is as Bronze put it once you are in the moment your thought process doesn't always work very well. Unless you have self defence drilled into your head until it comes to you as just another natural move no amount of classes will help you. I have been in that situation & know from first hand experience.
One of my main things that I do is trust my instinct & don't let myself get into any vulnerable situations.
Good luck & that is really thoughtful of you to offer!!

Ladies interested in firearms defence should look into training in combat pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting. It is a popular sport in fact. The Organisation I used to belong to is IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation). IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) is another good group. Get involved in the sport and you will develop the reflexes necessary. Find an instructor who is not eaten up with the macho and you will do better. There are also some fine female instructors around.
Contact the National Rifle Association for a listing of trained, qualified instructors.

Here's the deal about self defense in my opinion. I currently work around some pretty rough types. If you would defend yourself against these types, you had better be willing to shoot, cut, stab, maim, and otherwise f*** them up royally. Most of the times they will use a weapon against you. Or they will gang up on you. They will lie to you. They will tell you what you want to hear. Alot of these guys and gals are doped up, mean, nasty, crazy, slimy, pieces of shit. Some are just plain evil. They LIKE to see people in pain and hurt. I know. I've been there. All these people know is the law of the streets. Most of the time they will strike first to get an advantage. They are predators. You'd better be willing to get covered in someone else's blood if you want to defend yourself. Karate, ju jitsu, boxing, etc...all these have their place. But don't think because you took some "self defense" karate classes that you are ready for the deadly reality of a street confrontation Here's a theoretical example. Let's say thereis this a lady on a date. Things have gone well and she thinks that the guy likes her and all because he's talked nice to her and bought her dinner blah blah blah. On the way home, he starts kind of acting strange, talking about things that shouldn't have been talked about at this point, i.e., sex (graphic sex), Well naturally this lady is offended and asks him to take here home or let her out. He takes great offense at this and starts calling her offensive names-whore, whitetrash, c***, and so on. He then tries to grab her buy the wrist with one hand and her shirt by the other, trying to rip her shirt off. Well, this gal, having taken the latest whiz bang tactical nin jitsu "self defense" classes, tries to gouge his eyes with her key that she had in one hand. However, she misses and scrapes the side of the guys nose. This enrages the guy and he pulls out his hand dandy buck knife that he uses at his job to open boxes with. At the same time, he punches her in the side of the head multiple times. He gets his knife open and then stabs her in the chest, neck, stomach, etc. multiple times, causing blood to spurt from her body. He then proceeds to unzip his pants.........................................................

Sorry so graphic and no I am not some weirdo or anything. But for you ladies that want to learn "self defense", make sure you are willing to fight back like a rabid animal and still take the risk that you could be killed or mutilated. Take these martial arts studios that advertise for "self defense" with a grain of salt. Most of these instructors have never been in a life or death fight in their lives. You can learn some good moves. But remember that all that is usually forgotten in an adrenaline rush and then things usually get medieval..

Just some advice from someone who has not seen the elephant, but has seen first hand, moments after the fact, just what the elephant can do....

I can't dissagree on any of your points at all. Anyone can be sucker-punched ...What I mean by this is that even the most bad-assed person on the planet can get knocked out from a beer-bottle to the back of the head.

On the other hand, Is there a good reason not to learn to defend yourself a little bit better??

..edited add-on..

As an annalogy, do you lock your front door at night?? Windows??
Don't bother doing any of those, because a psycho can break down your door or break the windows to get in if he really wants to.

True, palehorse. I was just trying to show that things can get really messy sometimes. Yes, I lock my doors and sleep with a glock, a smith, and a remington 12 gauge in the room. I've had death threats due to certain things. And yes , I carry too. See ya....

One bit of advise I can pass on is for one to try to look like a predator him/herself. The scum look for those who look like victims; walk with head down, fearful expression, etc. If one is obviously aware of their surroundings and appears to be "in control", does not look away quickly, you may head off problems. Predators do not like to pick on predators, it is dangerous. Remember, most of them are cowards and target the weak.
Remember the stages of awareness:
Condition White: totally unaware of surroundings, a victim.
Condition Yellow: aware of everything and everyone around you.
Condition Orange: you have recognised a possible threat.
Condition Red: the threat is real, prepare to fight or run.
Condition Black: things have turned to s--t. You are fighting for your life.

See why it is best to not date at all.. LOL Date rape is not always like the above discription and sometimes one (being the woman) is not sure just what happened.. Many times like I have said above things start to get surreal and like a deer caught in the headlights it is bam over faster than one can think and then your bleeding from some place you never thought to bleed from.. All you want to do is get the heck out of dodge and never think of it again sadly the thinking prt never goes away and you just quit trusting.. I would love to think that I could or would have kicked some arse and taken names later but one has to be in the moment to understand that not all date rape is some idiot beating the hell- out of you and ripping your cothes off..

As for guns I have one and it did me absolutly NO good when I was calmly sitting on my front porch at 10 pm and 2 idiots decided to shoot up the house across the street from me.. I just got into my own house fast as I could and called the police..

So there are no simple solutions to this, I tend to stay out of places and if I were to date I would meet in a public place with a friend and I would leave by myself in my own car.... I will never ever go to his place for a beer with or without a friend, it only takes a moment to be raped,or sodomized and in that moment your friend will have no clue as to what even happened as that deer was so caught in the headlights.... One does not even scream from the pain.. It all happens so fast it is internalized.
