Square Pegs... I'm Texan Too! |

People out there in the world beyond the borders of nearest place to heaven (aka, Texas) often have the impression that Texas is a state full of right wingers, Christians, horse riding cowboys, or city slickers in $500 boots and a Stetson. We know better but in this home-of-George-Bush state not even Texans acknowledge that there are some of us who are not quite what one would expect us to be even as we're driving around with a "Native Texan" bumper sticker on their car.
I actually have three Texas stickers on mine. The only football team worth mentioning is the Texans. I live in a classic middle-class Texas style house: a mobile home. My drive is a quarter mile of holes and bumps. I was born here. I've visited Austin many times, lived in West, South, North East and East Texas. I stand and salute when the Yellow Rose plays and I've been to such diverse places as Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and even Luchenbach. I have a working knowledge of all those cities and a lot more. I have wept at the shrine of the Alamo and watched our legislature at work. I am Texan by birth and American by political convenience.
I'm also moderately liberal, Buddhist, quasi-pacifist. I've never ridden a horse, do not own a four-wheeler or a pickup truck (at least at the moment). I prefer sushi or seafood to beef steak. In the world at large I'm not all that unusual but in East Texas, especially, I am an anomaly.
The question is, am I the only one?
