I was borning in Houston Texas, well anyway, Houston is a huge place!!! It is 675 square miles here!! Has more and i mean much more than 50 million people, the average here is on the news 5 to 7 or more people are murdered by criminals each day, over 500 cars are stolen, and 10,000 or more babies are born (OH BTW< I WAS BORN IN 1956) excluding that long long long time ago i was born of course hehehehe!
The snow in Romney Texas was 4 feet high January 9th this year of 2006, BUT, ...Houston, we used our air conditioner on that same date (sigh). And Breckenridge Texas had sleet!! Yep!! But ya know what , read this>>>>
Have others of you that were either born in this state or lived here and experienced Texas, noticed as i have, that people from other states always act like we are some little bitty state??? Now i am going to place what was a responce to another post, i answered that pertained to rude people and meaness, which doesn't even apply, but i brought up about why people need to realize how large Texas is!! because i wanted to let them know as big as it is, oh wow oh wow, you cannot meet a Texan from Abilene Texas, and say oh yea, now i know how Texans are, uh uh! You better get ready to drive around for about 2 months and then you'll say, oh wrong, in Texas you can't define as Texas, but have to narrow it down per say area. Now i'll re post my answer that got me started on this issue.
[B][I] I hear you!! But i cannot say whether or not Texas has anything to do with it, one reason being, i live in Houston Texas, and i assure you, that Houston has the meanist rudest people that can be anywhere. It's hard to identify Texans as Texans, i say this because what people do not realize is that Texas is over 800 miles in length!!!!!
Okay, i was born in Houston Texas only 34 miles from Galveston...???????? Wellllllll, you can bet we are i mean nothing at all like someone you could meet in San Antonio, or Abiline, or the Pan handle area, or way out there let's say in el paso, or up and around to Odessa. Inotherwords Texas has 30 different climates minimum, plus more!! And has a minimun of 20 accents (of even the same breed) and 10 different skin tones of just the caucasion.
Now let's think of this, one end on the left wing, rams up into New Mexico, the other end rams into Louisianna, THEN THAT UPPITY PAN HANDLE (sigh) rumps between Okahoma and another state, then go down 974 miles and woweeee you is going to run into another country called Mexico!!! People just do not realize how big Texas is, another good example is this, now let me take 30 people out of a plus rich area in Houston, and stick them with 30 cowboys in Cisco Texas, and watch what happens[U] Well, take some time and figure that out, and then you will know what and why 12 years ago, a T shirt maker made Tshirts in Houston that had written upon them, "The Country Of Texas".
Now, as far as that mean and rude nonsense i see all the time, i'm 50 years of age right now, and i'm beginning to believe 7 or 8 out of every 10 people are rude. I think why these people are rude is for 3 reasons, one is that they have no self confidence!!! Other is that they are ignorant, and hiddenly they are really afraid of other people, and i believe there are truely Evil people!! As far as me, i'm very very much someone you just won't find, i am sentimental, and loving, and have no meaness at all!! I am glad you brought this up, because i notice in chat, people are mean for no reason at all, i don't get it.
But i really do think people need to stop thinking Texas is just some 150 mile long state.........Earl
(oh btw, i could go on for 2 days about other differences)

Hey Earl! I live in the Dallas area but I grew up in that UPPITY PANHANDLE area and let me tell you...we are nice from up there compared to the big cities. You have probably found this to be true. You are so correct though. It is almost as if people think of Texas as a town rather than a state...and they have no idea how damn big it is! Have a great nite!! (Guess at this time I should say morning!)
Later!

Hello and good moorning!! i am glad to meet yu ma'am. Speaking of Texas state, sorry to run thi thing in the ground, but if onl people would realize only Houston, Tx is a whopping 675 miles square feet, not only counting the top panel line and the east and west pport of this atste, they would be stunned, it;s gigainet. My guess is it is 975 miles long frompan handle, and the east to west is incredibale. it is actually a darned state. I;m thinking you are not only intellictual, but awar of reality, and i cannot deny, you have a smart and personaily!!! Earl

Not everyone living outside of Texas is quite as ignorant as you may think. Actually it is 880 miles across Interstate 10, and I have driven across all of it several times. Although it is a big state, one thing most have in common is a love of giving the d**n yankee a hard time. I am one and proud to say I lived 12 years in Texas. It is a great state. I have had the privelage of meeting and doing business with many in Houston, and I beg to differ, I don't think Houstonites are all that bad, You may need to look a little harder to see the good in people Earl. Have a great weekend.

Awrighty, I must say if the person that thinks Houston is mean, etc, just realized what percent of those people were actually born there and the largest majority bein' people from elsewhere, they may change their tunes. Don't blame it on Houston Texans for being mean and rude. We are getting a little crowded by all those others. So much so, that some of us are moving out for peaceful places. Did I say that? aw, heck...I really would rather be back in Houston

I have to agree with you on this issue, very much!! I myself talked to a realty that i originaly bought my house from in 1989, it's paid for, luckily, so i can get easily 75k for it, and i know this sounds crazy, but i visit Sherman Oaks California about 3 times a year, and Beverly hill is only 8 miles from Sherman oaks, and venice beach is right there to the right, maybe a half mile from Beverly Hills, i want to move there, reason is, i noticed since i started visiting there around 1998 3 times a year, unlike here, people talk and really care about you!!!
Also they don't stare at you, but if you say something they just start talking like they have always known you!! With my career i could easily afford to live there, as a matter of fact, this sounds not possible, but there are homes around 40 miles from Beverly for the 60 k range!! Oh yes!! And sure gasoline is higher, but what people do not realize, your basic burger king employees make 10 dollars an hour, and people seem happy all the time!!! And they don't care if you have money are if you are rich, they reach out and talk because they love to be happy and have a good time, and unlike many people think, BV isn't like the 60's, no they are not on drugs...At one time i would have moved to Florida, i love Cocoa beach area!! But now it's a crime ridden not too nice a place...Earl

In all of Harris County, of which Houston makes up the largest part, there are about 4 million population, not 50 million. As for the rest, Earl is full of beans.
By the way, I am a fifth generation Texan.

Actually the population within the Houston city limits is a little over 2 million from census records of 2005. The Greater Houston, Sugar Land, Baytown area is just under 5.3 million, the Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington area is 5.8 million.
The biggest cities in the world, Tokyo - 35 million, Mexico City and NYC -- 19 million do not come close to 50 million. Check your facts Earl.

Those facts are based on census reports, many many illegals live in Houston, it is 625 square miles of concrete, and much much larger than ft worth Dallas area. The traffic is very very congested here!!! I was born at St. Joseph hospital in 1956 here in Houston,,,,Earl

Well, to go from 5.8 million, to more than 50 million, you would have to have about 8-9 uncounted people for every counted one. Houston is nowhere close to the size or congestion of Mexico City and they are only at 19 million and they don't have any illegals uncounted.
I was born in a hospital too, but it wasn't yesterday...

Like I said, Earl is totally out of touch with reality. Here are some real numbers:
INS ESTIMATE
The INS estimated in February 2003 that the illegal alien population in Texas was 1,041,000 residents as of January 2000. That was a nearly a fifty percent increase from the previously estimated 700,000 illegal aliens residing in Texas as of October 1996. As of October 1992, the INS estimated the illegal alien population was estimated to be 357,000 residents. The INS later revised this latter estimate to 530,000 illegal alien residents to account for a larger number of Mexican illegal aliens. Most of this illegal alien population is new, because earlier illegal aliens benefited from the amnesty provision in 1986. When an amnesty for illegal resident aliens was enacted in 1986, there were 445,052 applicants from Texas (308,517 long-term illegal residents and 136,535 agricultural workers).
The current INS estimate means that Texas has the second largest illegal alien population in the country (after California).
Based upon the new 2000 Census data, the Migration Policy Institute issued a May 2002 study that estimated Texas's illegal alien population at 1.2 million.

Now I have read a lot of information on this forum but am totally confused.
First I had the misfortune of being born in Alabama while my dad was in the army. However didnt take em long to get me back where home was.
Now I dont know all Texas history but I know many of generations of my family lived in this area but from the history books of my grand dad... spots wood ford. Houston didnt actually exist until after the big storm that wiped out Galveston. He was a gambler and a shrimp boat owner during that time. All the buisness folks that survived the storm moved inland. And from his stories this is when Houston actually began to grow.
There is a street in North Houston named after him Spots Wood Drive. Also If you check the papers he installed the first AC system in the movie theaters in Houston.
Now I realize this isnt all in the History books but I tend to believe him.
Good day.

Well, let's see-I love people as a species-and there are good and bad people everywhere. Wanted to preface what I'm about to say as it's not meant to be offensive, just my own observation. I live in a resort area on the Gulf of Mexico-on a peninsula. Our combined population is about 9,000 for where I live and the town that starts where ours stops. In the winter, we have triple our population and in the summer-we don't really know-but most people think we have more summer people than winter Texans. I have some friends from other states that are about to descend upon us. But there are some people who act like they are demeaning themselves to be here. They act like we are stupid because we don't talk as fast as they do. They leave miniscule tips in our restaurants. They have some kind of attitude that leaves me cold. The way I see it-we don't have to climb in a long, tin box to go 3000 miles to get away from where we live, to cook on a tiny stove, and hang bags of oranges from the tongue of our homes. They ride bikes or walk in the middle of the road and will NOT move over for a car. Everyone of them seems to have at least one dog. I like dogs, okay? I just don't like yappy dogs that try to bite me when I'm in my own community! For some reason these people act like, "Well, we're here now, lick my shoe tops". I don't even know if I'm on topic but thanks for letting me vent. Whew! I needed that!
