Hi, I'm thinking about relocating to Texas, but I am afraid of the tornados and floods that we hear about. Is there anyplace in Texas that is kind of safe from those things?

Thank you for the input. My daughter just got stationed in San Antonio. I have been keeping track of the weather there for the last couple of weeks. It has been in the 90s ! I live in Northern CA and it is still in the 60s and raining here. I know it would be hard getting used to the weather there. I lived in Louisiana for a while several years ago and the humidity was hard to get used to. What do you like about living in Texas?

Texas is interesting in that it has many different kind of places.. the one thing that holds it all together is that Yeah its hotter than hades in the Summer time.. the eastern reaches of Texas are the greenest. all along the gulf coast is humid, the north eastern has piney woods that change into swamp when your at the Beaumont area going south down the coast you find llive oak and grasslands along with the cotton, milo and on occasion corn fields mixed in, this lasts till Corpus Christi, south of there is more arid tropical, cactus, mesquite and various other types of desert like plants thrive.. from corpus north to San Antonio your in the coastal plains the closer to San Antonio the rolling hills kick in and the city there is actually in a Valley.. From there north or east you are in the hill country.. it too is semi arid to arid but not desert.. the Hill country goes up through Austin area and I am not sure but quite close to Dallas.. Dallas north is the only countyside in Texas that I have not lived or been through.. West of Dallas is the Cap Rock and this consists of Canyons, and grasslands and cotton fields also.. Very Arid and rocky.. Here in the Lubbock area we are Arid and flat.. Tornadoes are a fact of life where ever you go even Tenn., Ohio, Oklahoma and Kansas has them , at the coast there are the Hurricanes LOL... Its a part of life in many places.. But darn the living is good here we don't count the miles we count how many hours it takes to get somewhere, no state income tax as of yet, The best Mexican food anywhere hands down and Summer nights cannot be beat... Yeah from time to time I want to get out and be free from some of the stuff here but I never seem to leave LOL....

Tell you about Texas eh?
Ok well i live in San Antonio, we get a lil then a lot of rain. yes we have flooding.. actually had real bad flooding a couple of times.... I lived here since 97.... its very pretty and it has its moments..... but no matter where u live.... yer home is always where u have always lived..... i still think about and visit michigan as often as i can
The riverwalk is beautiful during the right season, we have a annual festival called fiesta... when we have a parade of roses on the river.... a annual ceremony when they light a nice big tree downtown, not to mention the Alamo... driven past it... never been to it.. it makes me feel too touristy to go there.... we have one drive in left.. and good dining locations... fairly friendly people... theres a whole lot of hertiage in the works... i would have to say no matter where you decide to move to.... you risk either loving it or hating it..... so best of luck to you

Angelb, is there anyplace just outside San Antonio that doesn't flood? And, have you had a tornado go through there since you've lived there?
Darlingirl, We have 4 seasons where I live, but spring and fall are only a week or two long

Higher ground areas that arent near any rivers and lakes dont tend to flood where i lived when iwas still with my husband didnt flood.... its out near LYTLE tahts the closest city i can think of... its only say 30 min from downtown san antonio... in the years i have lived here we have only had one tornado hit that area..... We barely had any damage... it just blew osme of our shingles off.... of course others werent so lucky.... and it was a trailer park so i was absolutely terrified
The worst that happened.... my neighbor next door... had a nice size section of his roof ripped off.. and he got water damage.... but insurance took care of that quickly..... thats one thing they have good flood damage insurance in most sections of the city.... so that you can get back to living....

A person that lives in any major city or town in Texas, cannot answer would Texas be okay, but could mainly let you know about how it is in the part they live in. Texas is so huge, it's impossible to answer. My Mother lives in Mansfield Kennedale Texas area by Fort Worth, i live and was born in Houston Texas. My advice, is don't move to Texas. Please don't move here, job market is horrible, and the other reasons, i won't say, because it may cause people that do not live in the area that i live in, to think i;m being judgemental. My reason for answering your topic was to help only, i hope you think about what i've said, and i hope you're doing good and i hope no one is offended. Earl
P.S. I took airflight for vacation to Sherman Oaks California in year 2000 in June, from there i went and got a motel in Beverly hills California only 8 miles from there, every day, i would sit and drink coffee sitting in the tables by the plave where the hand prints of movie stars are, i loved the weather, it was so beautiful, and People there treat you like they've always known you, I remember after about my 3rd day there, i went to the Bowl to see Peter Paul and Mary, and on the bus i took there, everyone just started talking and laughing, people are better there, they really are, i know i lived it! I went to Venice beach that's only about 5 miles from Beverly hills and that water was so beautiful and blue!!! Plus it has all these little stores along the beach, sort of like dollar stores, and also again, everyone was so nice!! People just start talking to you, and they all seem happy. I saw Susan Summers beach house, it's the burnt would type on tall, wood blocks, i also saw Allan Funt that was the Canded Camera man from the 60's at a Mexican food restuarant, but they have a truse there, you are to not stare at them, only glannce and don't bother them for signutures. I also saw Jack Nicholsons house, wow, you have to drive high up on yhis hill, and i went by the place where the Beverly Hillbillys house was, and the gates was still there, but for some reason, the house was torn down, and no house was there anymore. But San Francico, would not be pleasant at all!! No way, people there aren't mean it's just a major rat race and crime. Sure beverly hills cost much more to live, but remember, minumum wage is three times more than Texas. Take a jack in the box type job, it might pay as much as 10 per hour!! Earl

I lived in California for over 15 years. Competition for work is crazy...traffic is crazier. Most of the people that treated you like they known you were probably high on something.
Give me the wide open spaces (what's left) of Texas ANY DAY! Been here 10 years and probably will be here till I die.

Houston sub male, you've got that right!! That reminds me of something back around 1992, there was a Priest, that was telling women they needed to stop getting abortions, based on the fact that first off, it is wrong, and secondly, no way is the world overpopulated. A groups measured the complete world population, and it was fact, that everyone in the entire world, if they stood side by side, would only fill half of Jacksonville Florida. So a place as large as Texas, everyone in the world would easily fit in our City here in Houston Texas. Earl

Well, if I may-I'm a native Texan so I'm prejudiced-I love Texas. It's not the weather because to be honest, I don't think you can go to a perfect place on earth...but I have had mostly good experiences all my life with people here...unless they have moved here from somewhere maybe north (I don't mean that offensively and have great friends up north, but we have a different lifestyle and sense of humor sometimes). I think if you are a great person with a good personality, you'll do fine here no matter where you decided to live. If you like the coast and don't mind insurance costs-I live on the coast and love it. If you like the hillier terrain, our Texas Hill Country, around Fredericksburg and Kerrville is beautiful. If you like flat land, go west! If you like mountains, there is always Alpine. I also like the pines so east Texas has lots of those. I thought on a vacation last year I would feel better leaving the humidity behind-but it was right there in other states too! So live where you can be happy and you'll find that weather will just be a little part of your concerns. Best wishes to you and yours and we hope you will find us friendly and helpful if you do come our way.
Blessings,
Phyllis

Texas has good ppl in it,, especially in the rural areas. It seems the cities have been overrun w/ foreigners and so you cant get a true idea of what it really is like. I've lived in TX most of my life,, and was born in san antonio and raised in dallas,, but now live in central tx.. on the northern edge of the hill country. I gotta tell you,, i HATE,, repeat HATE the summers! THey are oppressively HOT. So, if you've got an adversion to heat,, then DONT think about living here. My ideal situation is to have a summer home in the mtns of colo or New Mex.. and come back here in the winter... maybe.. I dont really mind the snow of the rockies, cuz its not bad. You midwesterners and northeasterners, i know you have your belly full of winter by about march,, and dont even get spring til mid may.. so,, my sympathies.
As for HOUSTON,, well, its the armpit (am being nice!) of the state,, and probably the US. but, hey,, lots of money to be made there.. And the natives wouldnt live anywhere else, THANK GOD! they can KEEP it!
just to give you a thumbnail's view of what a 57 yr old native thinks. I repeat,, the PPL are the BEST! and WEST tx ppl are the BESTEST!
yaaaaaaaaay!
