Soon after my divorce and the family moving out stuff,my nine year old son put the key to his mothers new apartment on the same keychain he had his small folding pocketknife on. Knives in school arent allowed, thats great and one day is fine but a three day suspension for that one sure made the old man raise enough hell to get it reduced.

thats a shame and well once my oldests school calle dme just as i was going to pick her up (middle school) and was told to come get her in the deans office .... I get there and shes being held because she got in a fight..... some girl she diidnt even know walked up and punched her in the face (sucker punched her) and well she defended her self... (was a racial thing UGH) andyways they were saying that she was gonna be suspended for fighting im like " THE HELL SHE IS" and "THIS WILL NOT GOING ON HER RECORD AT ALL " there were enough witnesses to prove she hadnt started anything just finished it... even a teacher saw the whole thing...the dean was adamnat about them BOTH being suspended I said well just call the cops now cause Im not leaving till this is gone from her reocrd and she is admitted to school in the AM ... I got on the cell and called the super of the schoool and HE came down and took care of the situation... to my satisfaction.. the other girl was suspended and had detention and mine was reinstated with no mark on her records... at least HE knew that i woulda gone to court about her right to defend herself from attack... the really screwed up part of hte whole thing?? it was a case of mistaken identity .. apparently the girl heard that a blonde girl in such n such a class had been flirting with her bf and it wasnt my daughter...
I know she was afraid I was gonna get mad at her for the scene but all i said was (after viewing her split lip) was "she bettter look ALOT worse than you" ... I dont truck wiht cowards taking pot shots ... she didint even knock her books outta her hands to fight fair she popped her while she was carrying an arm full of books the chickenchit grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That's the problem with "zero tolerance" policies. They sound good, but don't allow for any common sense at all. Gawd forbid an administrator actually having to think.

I think I was pushing my luck having five kids. Ya just KNOW ONE of 'em is gonna ... well ... be *a challenge* ...
The 13 year old boy twin ... yeah, he's the one. He makes me think of Jim Carey in some of his more stupid movies ... *sigh*
He's had a few *IN School Suspensions* ...
He gave his friend a wedgie at recess time ... His FRIEND ... No complaints from the kids ... but a teacher saw it & ZERO TOLERANCE ... After School Detention for a week.
He poured a salt shaker into the cleaning solution in the cafeteria at lunch ... on a dare ... "I'll give you a dollar if you do" ... He got the dollar & a week's detention.
Of course, there's the multitude of times that he has *forgotten* to do or turn in his homework ...
Right now he is working off a payment for property damage at school ...Cleaning the walls & halls with the janitor after school ... He was playing a little basketball & slam dunked ... and grabbed ... and ... well...the hoop & the backboard were damaged .. um .. broken ...
*sigh*
He so very often has me in tears of hysterical laughter with his entertaining stories at the dinner table ... but he is ... *A Challenge*

My oldest has been suspended three times from high school unfortunately. Once he skipped the morning of an early release day..that happened his freshman year. Three days out of school. Last year, as a sophomore, he skipped a field trip to a college fair and got caught. Three days for that. He was a couple minutes late getting to study hall and when the teacher sent him to the office, Dillon swore under his breath..obviously not under enough. Since it was his second suspension that year, it was a week out of school.
Yeah, I have my hands full.

...Zero tolerance rules are totally biased to the bullies and those that are there to cause trouble. Biased in that those types could care less if they are suspended.
...Different schools react differently, but at the first sign of BS, I have found it best to call and follow up with a certified letter to the superintendent; keep a copy and proof of receipt.
...Within, I explain the issues, the perpetrators and the school is now on notice that my son(s) will defend themselves; not explaining that with years of self defenses, they are fully capable of doing so. Any repercussions will be met in the civil courts; first with the right to defend and second, for damages by the negligence that the school was put on notice and refused to intervene by their own zero tolerance program.
...After that, I have never had any problems with future self defense or suspension issues and there were several occurances. On the other hand, "johnny" had better not be starting any nonsense, or it will be taken care of at home. I send them there to obtain an education and not to chew the erasers off pencils, or start trouble.
...Nevertheless, over the years, there have been numerous "challenges" in seemingly all facets. But as brothers, they all stick together.
...Now myself? I went to 13 different schools in the first 12 years, always the new kid and suspended so many times, mostly for fighting, everyone lost count. My Father worked construction and we moved wherever the work was, until my senior year. Since Mother had dark hair and eyes, I presumed we were possibly gypsies.
...Nine years later, the school still refused a senior class trip for my younger brother, still blaming it on my class; three divorces with the chaperones and another three day suspension before graduation, I still had four extra credits.
All, unbeknown to my sons... except an occasional leak from friends and relatives.
...As I tell my sons, there is nothing they can think of, that I don't already know they are thinking.... and they wonder how.... Without a doubt, if I had daughters, I would have been totally lost...

Cole was suspended for a day I think when he was a sophomore. There was a kid that was a year older, he kept harrassing Cole in class. The teacher didn't do a damn thing. So Cole called him a not so nice name after about 5 minutes of the kid just being an ass on day. They suspended Cole for the name. Called me and said he was suspended, I said come on Cole were going out for pizza. It pissed me off that he was suspended and that harrassing kid got nothing.I told the principal what I thought and it wasn't nice. I got to tell you that the school does hate it when I go in there.. usually.

My 15 y/o old daughter just got suspended for not serving a detention. I think suspensions are ridiculus. The kids are getting "excused from school" and getting to do whatever they want, especially if the parents work. Of course, I'm home, and she got NO PRIVIES, but still.....what do the kids do when the parents work??

When I was in highschool I got a three day suspension myself and when my father found out the suspension was to be served in school, sitting in the sickroom next to the principles office he came down to the school while I was "doing time",doing nothing in that sickroom. He did get my suspension served at home. It was planting season.

I have to admit that when my son was given three days suspension for skipping school I thought it a ridiculous punishment considering the "crime". "Okay..you skipped school so you have to stay home three days.."

My 11 yr old is one of the smallest kids in his school so it goes without saying that he gets crap from some of the bullies. What they don't realize is that he's a state qualifier in wrestling and averages 10 tackles per football game. Recently he was being pushed around by a kid that was at least 6 inches taller and about 40 lbs heavier. After several times of telling the kid to stop my son put his hand on the kids throat and held him away from him. Yep, that's when the principal looked. They called to tell me my son had in school suspension for fighting even though they know that the other kid started it. The school seems to think that a child is supposed to just take it until they can get away to tell someone or to just scream loudly til help arrives. I'm still fighting them on this even though the suspension has already been served. I think a child has a right to protect himself. I told them I thought he handled it very well considering he was very capable of a double leg takedown followed by a beat down. I think I'll try your route Gemini.

I hear ya lilbikerchick.I probaly shouldnt have started this thread becuase its reminding me of all my problems being a little s--t in school myself.I wrestled at 98 as a freshman and only 145 as a senior. In my junior year a wise ass kid larger than me wised off to the wrong person in wood shop.(I have five brothers so I knew a little about defense) After the battle was won and the instructor took me to his office,he didnt send me to the principle,he called my dad and told him what had happened. I knew what pa would say, heard the teacher chuckle a bit and was sent back to class. That kid had it coming, the teacher knew it,my pa knew it and so did I.
BTW-thats my late dad driving those Belgians

Well...my little one hasn't been suspended yet...but she did have a Hallway conference with a student teacher in the hopes that the teacher would stop speaking to her class in such a condescending tone. Did I mention she was 8?

each thing is differnt. my daughter did get suspended from school. but not because of a knife. it was for drinking at a football game. she got punished for this act. but as some one eles said zero tolerance is there moto any more because of all that has happend. in my case it was a good thing no police were involved and she was just supended. mybe that is how you have to look at it.

Neither of my boys ever were suspended, though on one occasion I couldn't believe my youngest son wasn't. He got caught having been drinking at homecoming, along with all his limo buddies. He apologized profusely, and promised to stand up at assembly at talk about the evils of drinking. (all I know is how very sick he was, maybe that was hard lesson enough)

Any kid should know that you should never bring a knife to school, so yeah, that kid deserved the suspension. As did the one who got the boot for drinking at a football game. NO excuse for that crap. Loreli, your kid got off way easy. As far as defending yourself from a sucker punch, nope, you should always have the right to self defense under attack.
He gave his friend a wedgie at recess time ... His FRIEND ... No complaints from the kids ... but a teacher saw it & ZERO TOLERANCE ... After School Detention for a week. Sorry, but that one made me laugh, and no, I don’t think anything more than a reprimand was in order. Now if it hadn’t been a friend (boy do do some goofy stuff when messing around with their friends) and it was to instigate something more than horse play, that would have justified suspension.
He so very often has me in tears of hysterical laughter with his entertaining stories at the dinner table ... One of the biggest challenges I have ever had as a parent, is maintaining a straight face long enough to discipline, and make it to my room where they can’t hear me, before I bust up laughing at what they did.
Once he skipped the morning of an early release day.. All these stories makes me wonder how my kids turned out so weird that my son wouldn’t even let me write a note to get him out of school to go get his driver’s license on his birthday. “NO way Mom. If I don’t show up for school I can’t go to practice, and if I don’t go to practice I can’t play in the game.” I was shocked and wondered if he was on something LOL My widdle baby freaks, but I love ‘em! Maybe because they were also raised with…
On the other hand, "johnny" had better not be starting any nonsense, or it will be taken care of at home. I send them there to obtain an education and not to chew the erasers off pencils, or start trouble. ...As I tell my sons, there is nothing they can think of, that I don't already know they are thinking.... and they wonder how.... hehehe Yeah, I was the one who got all the suspensions. And when that happened, I usually got a list of chores to do at home during it. I was always the one who protected my sister and friends, so fighting was the biggest one. Of course the time they caught me holding Tina’s cigarette, and tried to kick me out for smoking, I almost got a permanent expulsion for direct insubordination, for using profanity when I told them to F off, because I never took a drag off that cigarette, and they couldn’t lie and say I did. The final words written on the suspension were for “holding a lit cigarette on school property”. Called my mom and told her I had been booted again, and what happened, asked for the chore list, and she told me there wouldn’t be one this time. Maybe she decided it wasn’t worth the pain, since she probably had writer’s cramp from all the lists for my brother. He even had his first probation officer at 12. I still feel badly the way my sweet, innocent little sister got eyeballed suspiciously by all teachers that had had to deal with my brother and I.
Well...my little one hasn't been suspended yet...but she did have a Hallway conference with a student teacher in the hopes that the teacher would stop speaking to her class in such a condescending tone. Did I mention she was 8? RFLMAO, we must have fed our girls the same gunpowder. Mine has been taking adults to task since she could talk, much to the shagrin of those who think children have no brains. Usually I just laugh at their reaction. And no, I don't even try to hide in my bedroom to do it.
